Bob was born Feb. 5, 1928, in the Bronx, New York City, the son of
Blanche (Fleishman) and George Meister. He was a graduate of De Witt
Clinton High School, in the Bronx, where he was president of the Class
of '45. He began his studies at New York University, then entered the
U.S. Army, serving as a reporter in Tokyo on Stars and Stripes,
Pacific, from 1946-48. Returning to New York University, he majored in
journalism, was editor of the student paper, and graduated in 1950.
Bob then returned to Tokyo during the American occupation of Japan.
He worked as a civilian employee for the Army Signal Corps;
International News Service, 1950-51; and the Far East Network of the
Armed Forces Radio Service, heading its newsroom, 1951-53. While
working in Tokyo, he met Amy June Rosenberg, whom he married Nov. 21,1951.
In 1953, the couple moved to Spokane, Wash., where Bob became the
assistant wire editor of the Spokesman Review. Five years later, in
1958, they moved to Buffalo, N.Y., where Bob worked on the copy desk
of the Buffalo Evening News, then the wire desk handling national and
international news, eventually becoming the wire editor. During the
Blizzard of '77, when most residents were not allowed to drive on the
roads, Bob was provided with identification stating he was an
"essential employee" of the News. He was part of the team staying at
the paper so that news coverage continued. He even spent one night
sleeping under his desk.
In addition to his employment at the News, he edited the Buffalo
Jewish Review for many years. He and his wife also were active members of Temple Beth Zion.
After retirement, the couple moved to Ivoryton, Conn., in 1994, then
Brookline, Mass., in 2003. They have been active members of Temple Sinai.
