Sara Kallins Feldman of Dedham, formerly of Newton and Pittsburgh, died on August 16, 2022, aged 87.
Born in Baltimore, she was the only child of Sigmund and Beatrice Kallins. She was the beloved wife for nearly 67 years of James Feldman. They met at Carnegie Tech and married while there. After Sara finished her Bachelor of Fine Arts and Jim his PhD, they moved to Newton to be near Jim’s brother and his wife, Wally and Cecily Feldman.
Jim and Sara shared a love of the outdoors – hiking, week-long backpacking, rock climbing, and downhill and cross-country skiing – in the United States and in Israel.
Sara had a successful 60-year career as a professional artist. Her paintings hang in museums, offices, and homes, in America and in Israel. Her special pleasure were representational landscapes from the many places she visited in America and Israel. She was a member of the cooperative Depot Square Gallery of Lexington.
Sara was a kind, generous, and gentle soul, who drew in friends and family. In later years, she loved the weekly family Shabbat dinners, hosted by her daughter Lynn and daughter-in-law Lori, surrounded by her grandchildren.
A 1980s skiing collision triggered head-injury-induced Parkinson’s disease. Sara showed great courage and resilience, and never complained, as the disease gradually robbed her of physical ease, the ability to compose paintings, and eventually even her vision. Her son Henry’s extraordinary oversight of her medical care, and Jim’s constancy as a caregiver, won her an extra decade or more of life, allowing Sara to see her grandchildren launch their careers. She loved their many accomplishments and had pictures of them proudly displayed throughout her home.
Sara Kallins Feldman is survived by her beloved husband, Jim Feldman; by her children, Lynn Segal and Mickey Segal, MD PhD, and Henry Feldman, MD, and Lori Feldman, DVM, and by her beloved grandchildren, Raphael Segal, Capt. Rebecca Segal, and Yoni Segal, and Rachel and Joshua Feldman.
The funeral service will be held on Monday, August 22 at 10:00 am in the Gann Chapel at Temple Emanuel. Masks are required.
Gifts in Sara’s memory can be made to Combined Jewish Philanthropies or the charity of your choice.
