GLAZER, Selma L. “Suni” (Steingard), age 85, of Natick, MA, died peacefully on January 18, 2024. Born in Bridgeport, CT, Suni was the daughter of the late Violet and Abraham Steingard of Bridgeport, CT. In 1956, she graduated Central High in Bridgeport, CT and earned her RN degree from Boston’s Beth Israel Hospital School of Nursing in 1959. Soon after, she married Leon Glazer, the love of her life, and they moved to Natick, MA to raise their family. Sadly, he passed away in 1978.
The family were active congregants of Temple Israel in Natick. Suni was a member of ORT, Beth Israel Hospital Nurses Alumnae Association and a longtime volunteer fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. She worked at Kathryn Barton Nursing Home in Wayland, MA for many years as a Charge Nurse while also inspiring and mentoring other healthcare workers to advance in their careers.
She was often found shopping at Boston’s Filene’s Basement, Marshalls or TJ Maxx, finding the best bargains and assuring her kids were dressed in the latest fashions. She enjoyed her tenpin bowling league and her weekly canasta game with the ladies. She loved the cultural arts, attractions, and all that Boston had to offer. Suni often took her young children, Debbie, Caryn and David, to the theater, symphony, museums, aquarium, zoos, parks, and special events. Later in life, it brought her great joy to share these experiences with her beloved grandchildren, Lori and Michael. Once her kids were off to college, she began her worldly travels, restaurant hopping in Boston, and excursions to New York City for a Broadway show. An avid reader, she was a big fan of Jodi Picoult, while also enjoying newspapers and magazines. She especially liked Money Magazine and would frequently engage in business conversations with Dave. She was meticulous about cleaning and a champion bedmaker with perfectly tight hospital corners. A dessert lover of anything chocolate, especially ice cream, she could often be found in bed watching TV and enjoying Ben & Jerry’s or Buster Bars. A favorite pastime of hers was going to the beaches on Cape Cod, staying ‘til sundown and enjoying the “delicious” breeze of the ocean air, with a must stop at Sandy’s Clam Shack for some fried clams without the bellies.
Suni had close friends in many different circles and valued those friendships dearly. It was her nature to always offer help, whether it be picking up groceries, driving to a medical appointment or supporting her friends in whatever way they needed. Despite being widowed early on in life, she had great strength, resilience, purpose, and a real joie de vivre. She was well known for her quick wit, “Suni” disposition and lively, infectious laughter. More than anything, she was a devoted mother who made many sacrifices to give her children all that they needed and then some.
Her ultimate joy in life was showering Lori and Michael with endless love, surprises, and happy adventures. She never missed an opportunity to share photos and stories of the incredible times she spent with them. The treasured memories of their time together were always close to her heart.
She leaves her daughters Deborah Kerzner of Scotch Plains, NJ and Caryn Glazer of Boston, MA; her son David Glazer of Fort Myers, Florida; her sister and brother-in-law Muri and Bud Reed of South Jordan, UT; her brother-and sister-in-law Larry and Mary Glazier of Hingham, MA; her cherished grandchildren Lori Weller (husband, Jimmy Weller) and Michael Kerzner; her great granddaughter Madison Weller; her many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews as well as her very dear friends Annie Segal, Rozzie Wennett, and the late Helaine Leavitt.
She was pre-deceased by her sister-in-law Carol Glazier, and her brother and sister-in-law Norm and Sandy Steingard. Service will be held at Stanetsky Memorial Chapel, Brookline, MA on Tuesday, January 23, 2024 at 12:00 PM. Interment to follow service at Sharon Memorial Park in Sharon, MA. Shiva will be observed at NewBridge on the Charles in Dedham, MA.
She will be missed dearly by all who loved and knew her.
