Stanley L. Cohen, at the age of 85, of Plantation, FL, passed away on Wednesday, September 16, 2020. He was the adored husband of Joan E. (Langbort) Cohen for 61 years. He was the son of the late Sophie (Golden) and William Cohen. Loving father to Adena Cohen-Bearak and her husband Arnie of Needham, and William Cohen of Los Angeles, CA. Beloved grandfather to Jonah, Jordan, Ariel and Cayla.
A graduate of Harvard and Hebrew College, Stanley also had three Master’s degrees. Stanley was an educator and leader in the field of Jewish Education for over 40 years. He was Director of Education at Temple Reyim and Temple Emanuel (Newton, MA), Temple Beth Israel (Sunrise, FL) and Temple Beth Am (Margate, FL). He also worked as the Director of Jewish Studies at Day Schools including the Posnack Jewish Day School and the Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater Boston. His gentle manner, humor, and caring personality positively impacted his many students and teachers over the years.
He and Joan traveled extensively, including to Israel and many European countries. Once grandchildren started to arrive, Stanley and Joan organized yearly family vacations alternating between Chatham, MA on Cape Cod and cities on the west coast near LA. Their Passover seders were not to be missed.
In his retirement, he became involved with the board of B'nai Aviv in Weston, FL, contributing his years of experience to that community. He and Joan led the Hazak group at B'nai Aviv and created many interesting programs for the elders who participated.
Stanley’s greatest joy was his grandchildren. He enjoyed blowing bubbles with them as toddlers, playing mini golf with them as children, and as teens and young adults, he listened to their troubles, and offered advice and empathy. He and his grandson Jordan had a special relationship and would often talk on the phone late at night.
Stanley and Joan had a special connection with their cousins Perry and Mona Levine and their children Robert, Jennifer, and Adam who lived nearby. They spent many Friday nights and holidays together, and were like grandparents to the children as they grew up.
Graveside service will be private.
