Stanley Lieberson, Abbott Lawrence Lowell Professor of Sociology, Emeritus, at Harvard University, 84, of Arlington passed away on Monday, March 19, 2018 at the Lasell House in Newton. Born in Montreal and grew up in Brooklyn, NY, son of Jack and Ida (Cohen) Lieberson. He earned an M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology at the University of Chicago. Much of his career involved work on race and ethnic relations in both the United States and elsewhere. Professor Lieberson has written several books and numerous papers on this topic in leading journals. One of his books, “A Piece of the Pie: Blacks and White Immigrants Since 1880”, received the Distinguished Contribution to Scholarship Award of the American Sociological Association. Among numerous honors, he was the co-recipient of the Paul F. Lazarsfeld Award from the Methodology Section of the American Sociological Association. He was a former President of the American Sociological Association, the Sociological Research Association, and the Pacific Sociological Association. He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and of the Center for the Study of Poverty and Inequality at Stanford University. Professor Lieberson was a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Philospohical Society, and was an honorary member of Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Iota of Massachusetts at Harvard College.
For 57 years, the beloved husband of Pat (Beard). Devoted father of Rebecca Lieberson and her husband James Babb, David Lieberson, Miriam Pollack and her husband Stuart, and the late Rachel Lieberson. Adored grandfather of Simon, Amelia, Sarah, and Hannah. Dear brother of Melvin Lieberson. Loving uncle of Lisa Lieberson.
He enjoyed his walks and canoeing at the Mystic River. His his greatest joy was playing with his grandchildren.
