Amy, I am sorry to hear about Steve. I just happened to be looking around on the internet and was curious about what he was doing these days and found this page. I very much enjoyed working with him at Lorain Community Hospital and was always amazed how a guy with his energy could be so avid about fishing. Again, my condolences, even though late.

We are in Maine for a short fall break and learned of Steve's passing.  We have so enjoyed being neighbors and it is hard to imagine Bay Pines without Steve sitting in his Adirondack chair.     I was fortunate enough to befriend Steve in Medical School. Along with Jerry and Ed, we shared a very intense ,acute time of our lives. Steve visited me in San Francisco during a senior externship. He stayed at my home in Pittsburgh for awhile(my mother loved Steve),I visited him and his family in Sharon, Pa., and we spent one historic summer in Washington DC with our med school friends. Those memories of Steve are very much alive with me, like yesterday-so many stories. He was  so vital, honest, deeply perceptive, hysterically funny, and with a profound and restless intellegence-but we drifted apart over the years. It is with sadness I heard of his passing, but with admiration I  read of his accomplishnents, and the man in full he became.He filled every minute it seems with 60 seconds of distance run--a remarkable and beloved man,an enduring legacy.

Amy/Meredith: It has been a very hard week for me as I've thought so much about one of my oldest and most unique friends.  He has been a friend for 60 years, and despite the distance between us, I will miss him very much.  Barely much older than I, The Gerse was infinitely wiser and taught me so much --  as he taught us all.  Among his gifts, perhaps the greatest was his capacity for empathy and compassion.  Or, maybe it was his humor; or his intellect; or his sense of perspective.  Maybe there is nothing greater than a friend with whom you can laugh about so much in a world we can barely understand.  Although we had been apart for much of the later years, the foundation we built from the early years never changed.  Even now I see him in junior high school, and I see the same guy that I saw in Lexington not so long ago.  I will remember and cherish my Steve stories (and his way with words) for the rest of my own days.  I wish that everyone had had a chance to know Steve Gerson.  While his last months were no doubt difficult, in the fullness of time the better memories and the joy he brought to life will be with you.  Be well.

Here's another memory that illustrates Steve's helpfullness and quirky sense of humor.  Steve was instrumental is starting my daughter Nicole on her career in medicine.  Steve helped land her a summer internship at McLean's, Harvard's psychiatric inpatient mental hospital.  We're certain that aided heer acceptance at  a number of medical schools..On her very first day on the job Nicole was handed a medevil looking set of keys to the joint. Shjet was imbued with the awesome repsonsibility of what that trust represented and she inquired of Steve what  largest and most gnarly key on the ring was for, to which Steve responded "  You don't want to know what's on the other side of the door that it opens."  And that was that.

MY heart is broken at the loss of my dearest friend of 50 years.  He was a powerful man of keen intellect and compassion who helped many people as these condolence messages reflect.  He was held in high esteem by his professional colleagues, patients, students, friends, family members and everyone who came in contact with him.  Steve believed in "tikkun olom", that one's obligation in life was to make this world a better place, and surely he did that.  We all will miss his sense of humor, his warmth and his attentiveness.
Steve will forever be a beacon of light on our paths through life.  May his memory be a blessing for healing, compassion, righteousness, and charity for us all, and especially for Amy and Meredith.

Dear Amy & Meredith,
We know that friends can sometimes be closer to us than relatives, that's how we felt about Steve. When I was the rabbi in Lorain & you lived in Oberlin, he was always available day or night when a congregant was in crisis. Our conversations over the years were always enlightening. It is impossible to verbalize how close the Bronsteins felt to the Gersons. We celebrated together - even if it meant a trip to Israel for the three of you - and shared in our mourning. We are better people because of Steve and are sorry that distance prevents us from being with you at this difficult time. May God who brings comfort to all who mourn grant you consolation among the other mourners of Zion & Jerusalem.

We spent a wonderful evening with Steve and Amy at their house in Maine and heard for the first time of Steve's deep and detailed knowledge of and enthusiasm for ancient coin archeology in the Middle East. He faced his health challenges with such great courage and smiling self-deprecation that one had little idea just how ill he was. It was a privilege to know him even for the brief time we did.

Amy, we will all miss Steve so very much.  He was like a brother to my father and patriarch to our family.  We cherished his pursuit for information on "the old country" in Luthiania.  You are in our hearts and thoughts.

 Steve was a valued friend who brightened my entire undergraduate time at Northwestern U.  He was instrumental in connecting me to my wife of 49 years, Marilyn, and was a member of our wedding party.  His father provided our engagement ring.  Steve was well ahead of his time in all sorts of ways—for example, I recall his taking an ecology course at N.U., decades before most people even knew what the word meant.  He could always make me laugh.  That's how I'll remember him.

I am so sorry to hear this. Dr. Gerson was an independent contractor for the company I work for. We had the wonderful opportunity to meet him in person when he joined us for a conference in Minneapolis a few years back.  He was a kind man.

I share your grief and sadness. Steve was like a brother to me. We shared many things over the years since we were classmates in medical school . He was a  true friend and an extraordinary and brilliant man of great compassion, wit and achievement. Steve will be greatly missed by all of his colleagues of the Society Historia Numorum.
