Steven Monis of Brookline, Massachusetts died unexpectedly at the Neville Center at Fresh Pond for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Cambridge, MA at the age of 72. Steven was born in Boston, MA to Max and Pauline Monis. He attended Boston Technical High School and co-managed a Pretzel Cart business with his older brother Bill Monis and his close-friends in Boston, MA. Steven went on to graduate from the University of Massachusetts Boston with a BA in Psychology. After college, Steven worked at Mass Mental Health Center where he met his wife Mary Ellen Monis. Mary and Steven were married in September 1983 in Woburn, MA and they were later blessed with three children; William Joseph Monis, PhD, Michael Van Etten Monis, MA, and Elizabeth Leah Monis, DO. He then went on to work at the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission/Disability Determination Services in Boston and was later promoted to the position of Supervisor.
Steven was a reserved man but this was overshadowed by the immense size of his loving heart and his ability to help and care for others. He spent his career ensuring that individuals with mental and physical disabilities received the financial compensation they needed to survive. In his earlier years, Steven was an active political member in the Town of Brookline. He always exhibited respect, loyalty, and support to his many friends and co-workers.
There are no other people that he cherished and loved more than his wife and three children. Steven was a strong family man and provider who enjoyed attending his children’s swimming meets, soccer games, and dance recitals. Words cannot express the feelings of joy and pride he had for his children’s academic accomplishments. Also, he loved to go on vacation with his family. Some of their travels included trips to Bermuda, The Dominican Republic, Mexico, and The Grand Canyon.
Steven is predeceased by his mother, father, and brother. He leaves behind his wife and three children along with his cousins Arnold Gordon, Sylvia Gordon, Joel Slarve, Michael Slarve, Richard Slarve and his nephew Adam Monis. He is to be buried at the Gardens at Gethsemane Cemetery, 670 Baker St, West Roxbury, MA.
