Kaplan, Sydney S. of Newton. Entered into rest on February 27, 2013 at the age of 94. Mr. Kaplan was a retired Lt. Colonel in the United States Air Force, a Dean Emeritus from Massachusetts College of Art and an Attorney. Sydney served in WWII with the famous 8th AF 56th Fighter group where he was awarded 5 Battle stars. He served in the Massachusetts Air National Guard from 1946-1971, and was stationed in France during the Berlin Wall Crisis (1961-1962). Mr. Kaplan retired from the military in July 1971. For the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, he was a state auditor (supervising field accountant); Business Manager of the Division of State Colleges, where he assisted in purchasing land for 11 colleges from North Adams to Bourne for a total of over 10 million dollars; and Dean of Massachusetts College of Art. For the next 14 years, he served as an attorney for indigents in criminal matters (1979-1983). He was also Vice President and Treasurer of the Jewish Community Center, Director of the National Guard Association, Trustee of Temple Israel of Boston, and a member of the Executive Board of the Newton Senior Center. Sydney was the dear son of the late Israel and Ida (Sgan) Kaplan. Beloved husband of the late Ruth (Jaffe) Kaplan. Devoted father of Ellen L. Kaplan; Robert G. Kaplan and his wife Gloria; and Stephen B. Kaplan and his wife Cathy. Loving brother of the late Arthur Kaplan. Dear grandfather of Sarah, Deborah and Jessica. Services will be held at Stanetsky Memorial Chapel, 475 Washington St, CANTON on Friday (TODAY), March 1, 2013 at 2:00 PM. Burial will follow at Sharon Memorial Park, Sharon. Friends and family are invited to gather at his daughter Ellen Kaplan’s residence between 4pm & 7pm on Friday and Saturday, and 10am-1pm on Sunday.
