Sydney was born on December 8th, 1929 in Brookline, MA, the only son of Harry and Tena Miller. He graduated from Tilton Academy. The highlight of his time at Tilton was when he was called to Fenway Park for a tryout with the Boston Red Sox. Sydney went on to study at Harvard University. After graduating Harvard in 1952, Sydney went to work with his father, Harry Miller, at the Harry Miller Company in Boston, which was founded in 1910. Sydney took over the family business as CEO and Chairman in 1955 when his father unexpectedly died and Sydney continued to be involved in the business up until his passing. While at Harvard, Sydney was introduced to his wife, Lorraine, by a friend. He credits Lorraine with being the backbone that allowed him to grow his business.
Sydney’s greatest joy in life was spending time with his family and dispensing advice to his children and grandchildren. He loved hosting the family for summer weekends on Cape Cod and winters in Palm Beach. These times spent together created memories that the entire family will always cherish. He could often be found on the golf course, sailing, or playing squash at the Harvard Club. Sydney had a love for scotch and eating dinners out.
Sydney was both altruistic and philanthropic, shown through his time as the former President of the Jewish Memorial Hospital, a director of US Trust Company, a director of Town Bank and Trust, a director of the Combined Jewish Philanthropies of Greater Boston, a director of Northeastern University and a member of the visitor’s board at the D’ Amore McKim School of Businesses at Northeastern University.
