Theodore Matthew Adelson
March 25, 1923 – January 30, 2019
ADELSON, Theodore M. of Rockville, MD; formerly of Marblehead, MA and Lake Worth, FL entered into rest on January 30, 2019 at 95 years of age. Beloved husband of Florence (Cohen) Adelson. Devoted father of Robert A. Adelson and his wife Julia Kahn, Steven H. Adelson and his wife Rhonda, and Carol Atlas. Loving brother of Marion Patick and the late Norman Adelson and Phyllis Evanstein. Cherished grandfather of William Ira, Katheryn Ada, Brenton, Jared, and Jennifer Rose.
Ted Adelson was born March 25, 1923, grew up in Cambridge, graduated Harvard College and was an ardent Red Sox fan. In September 1934, he attended a doubleheader vs. the New York Yankees and saw Babe Ruth’s last at bat in Fenway Park. Though a History major at Harvard, Ted also took a course in Japanese and was recruited by US Naval Intelligence. He became an Ensign in the US Navy and a “Codebreaker” during WWII. His years of active duty were 1942 – 1946. After his honorable discharge in July 1946, Ted returned from the Pacific to Cambridge and to his studies at Harvard to graduate cum laude in 1947. Ted Adelson, along with his proud parents, Edward and Ada Adelson, were in attendance at his Harvard College graduation, in May 1947, when the keynote speaker, Secretary of State George C. Marshall gave the commencement address that launched what became the “Marshall Plan”. After graduation, Ted worked as a buyer at Filene’s Basement, and later Landsberg’s in Washington DC. He returned to Cambridge in 1956, to open his own business, Teddy Shoes, in Central Square, Cambridge. Ted retired in 1998, but his son Steve, continues to own and operate the business to this date, a cancellation and discount retail shoe store. At age 91, in 2014, Ted Adelson attended the 70th reunion for his Harvard Class of 1944 and that night saw his last game with his beloved Red Sox at Fenway Park. Services will be held at Stanetsky Memorial Chapel, 1668 Beacon Street, BROOKLINE on Sunday, February 3 at 10 AM. Interment to follow at Pride of Jacob Cemetery, 350 Grove Street, West Roxbury.
Shiva will be held at the home of Robert Adelson and Julia Kahn on Sunday from 2:30–5 PM, following interment and Monday and Tuesday 5-8 PM. Shiva will also be held at the home of Steven and Rhonda Adelson on Wednesday and Thursday 6-9 PM.
