Toby David Abend, 81, a lifelong resident of Newton, Massachusetts, passed away on September 18, 2018. Toby was born on January 21, 1937, the son of Esther (Lyons) Abend and Louis Abend, in Boston, Massachusetts. He received a BA in Communications and Public Relations from Boston University. Upon graduating from college, he would soon find success in a multitude of areas. He became a successful and self-taught businessman. Those endeavors included a chain of laundry marts, his own construction company, but his true success was achieved through his real estate investments throughout the country. With his many real estate endeavors, he was often on their Board of Directors, including President of many. For almost forty years, he was a member of the National Ski Patrol, being the Patrol Director at both Blue Hills Ski Area and Nashoba Valley Ski Area in Massachusetts and a patroller at Waterville Valley and Loon Mountain Ski Areas in New Hampshire. As a father, he was very active in his children’s sports. He was a little league coach, the ski coach at Newton South High School, and became the President of the Newton South Booster’s club. He will be remembered for his zest for life, his loving of flying his plane, his passion to be on his Harley Davidson and his desire to help others. Family was always the most important aspect of his life. Toby is survived by his wife Susan, married for over 57 years; his sister, Ellen (Abend) Miller of Southboro, MA, his children Marc and his wife Lynda (McDonald) Abend of Ashland, MA, Larry and his wife Angie (Arnold) Abend of Newton, MA, Jacqui (Abend) Weiner and her husband Craig of Dedham, MA, Julie (Abend) Cahalin and her husband Chris of Plymouth, MA and Judy (Abend) Levine and her husband Robert of Framingham, MA. His love for his grandchildren never wavered, Rachel and Zachary, Tyler and Riley, Max and Aaron, Matthew and Joshua, and Hannah and Adam. Toby is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and friends. A funeral service and celebration of Toby’s life will be held at Temple Beth Am at 300 Pleasant Street, Framingham on Friday, September 21 at 1pm. Interment to follow at Sharon Memorial Park, 40 Dedham Street, Sharon, MA. Memorial observance will be at his late residence in Newton on Friday afternoon from 4-7pm, Saturday from 7-9pm and on Sunday from 1-3pm. Please remember Toby in your own way.
