Bill stood as witness along with Prof Cole and his wife at my marriage in St Andrews, Scotland in 1977.  Sadly we lost touch over the years and am just learning of his passing.  I remember a young man with a wonderful laugh and quick wit.

I am sorry to learn at this late date of Bill's passing. I was his MSc supervisor at McGill and prompted him to go on for a PhD at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland where I got my PhD. My supervisor and mentor Prof. Cole also became Bill's supervisor. We became friends at McGill and kept in touch for a long time but gradually and sadly lost contact.

I had Introduction to Computing with Professor Campbell in Fall 2016 and enjoyed taking that class. Professor Campbell was always there to help me when I had a question and would even encourage students to visit him. I just found out today that he passed away and wanted to pay my respects in some way. Rest in peace professor. 

I was one of Bill's Master's students back in the late 1980s, and helped implement some early pieces of UMB Scheme with him, among plenty of other projects. I seem to remember a very young Fiona dashing around the office while we talked compilers and Lisp :). My very best wishes to his family and all ...

What a beautiful person Bill was.  I will always remember his smile and his laugh.  He was a role model by example and I will always remember him.

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Bill Campbell. He was my next door neighbor at UMB for over 10 years and was a great man as well as a wonderful colleague. He was so very kind and supportive to the students and staff here. I remember many occasions when he would stop and chat at our office, telling jokes and laughing his memorable laugh. He was the type of faculty member that felt like a friend and was a great role model and mentor to the students. ~CS Office Staff

Bill was a great teacher, wise mentor and caring friend for me. He was kind and generous. He lived his life by the message of "The most important thing in life is to help others when you can". He helped me in many ways and shaped my personality with his philosophy. I'm heartbroken by the loss of Bill. My deepest sympathies go out to his family.

My sincerest condolences to the family of  a respected colleague at UMB. Bill and I shared many memories while dining together at the Faculty Club. He lived with his grandmother, Mrs. Gaskell, two doors away in Five Fields, Lexington, MA for several years. The house between us was the home of Vivi & David Nash, Bill and my best friends. I will let Davey know of Bill's passing. Such a loss!  God bless and RIP, dear friend.

I am so sorry to hear this news about Bill. It's been many years since I've seen him, but I will always remember him as a great teacher and a wonderful person to spend time with - kind, insightful, curious and really good at choosing a restaurant.

I feel so sorry to hear this news. Professor Campbell was a wonderful colleague and a very nice friend. I really miss the days we worked together in the department, and I am grateful for his advice on my research and teaching as I was just starting out. When I proposed the new course on computer games programming, Professor Campbell gave me a lot of advice on how to improve the design of the course, which made the course a very successful one. He was a very caring professor. I also had pleasant time discussing research with him on several occasions. He had a great sense of humor, and also a sincere appreciation towards arts and science. He will be deeply missed by his students, friends and colleagues. My condolences to his family and friends. - Craig Yu

I am so sorry to hear of Bill's passing.  When I joined UMB CS Dept in 2002, he was one of the first faculty members who gave me his time, advice, and invited me as a guest to one of his classes to help me get on board.

So sorry to hear this sad news. Professor William Campbell was a great colleague. He was very caring and loved by his students.

Bill and I spent a lot of time together over the last ten years, in groups and occasionally together. He was an honest, funny and insightful fellow traveller, and served as an example of love and acceptance to many. My life, and I know the lives of many others, are better for his being here among us.
