

Yaacov Shapira, age 83, of Wayland passed away peacefully at his home on September 14, 2021 after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Alva (Nash) Shapira, nieces Maya Shapiro, Laura Miles, Lara Hughes and nephew Jonathan Hughes.
Yaacov was born in Haifa, Israel on January 9, 1938. He came to the U.S. as an undergraduate at Brandeis University where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics. He went on to attain a Ph.D. in Physics at MIT. He continued to work at the MIT Francis Bitter National Magnet Laboratory researching low temperature condensed matter physics. In 1987 he joined the faculty at Tufts University as a Professor of Physics. Throughout his career he published more than 200 articles on magnetism and superconductivity.
Yaacov loved music, art and travel, all of which he shared with his devoted wife. He was a longtime supporter of the Museum of Fine Arts and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He particularly enjoyed concerts that included Mahler Symphonies.
Graveside services at the North Cemetery, 60 Old Sudbury Rd., Wayland on Sunday, September 19 at 11:00am, all attendees should be vaccinated and masked.
