

Zoe Levenson, a long-time Newton resident died on Sunday, January 5, 2014 of complications from age-related dementia at age 85. Born in Poland, she immigrated at age ten when her mother placed her on a ship bound for the United States. At age sixteen and already a budding cellist herself, she noticed a good looking cellist on the stage of a concert by The Cleveland Orchestra. “I’m going to marry that man.” she said to her companion. Four years later she did. Zoe and husband, the late David Levenson, had a long a happy marriage dedicated to music, community, and family. Zoe was a student of Leonard Rose, and an accomplished musician who taught cello, played in chamber and orchestral ensembles and hosted musical events. With unbounded energy, she approached each day with vigor dedicated also to gardening, cooking, entertaining and refinishing antique pieces. Zoe is the mother of Brookline resident, Jeffrey Levenson and the late Carrie Levenson-Wahl, who died in Paris in 2012. She will be sorely missed by her large circle of friends and by her grandchildren, Sasha Romary, Gabrielle Levenson-Wahl, Erica Levenson, and Nathan Levenson. Funeral services are private.
