Alethia Corinthia Glaze was born September 25, 1943 in the island of Jamaica. She immigrated to Brooklyn from Kingston, Jamaica in 1981 seeking a better life for her children. Alethia was the mother of three kind, disciplined and successful children that love God. Her children and grandchildren were always the most important thing to her. Alethia took tremendous pride in her children, who collectively thanks to her training, despite very limited financial means, attended Princeton, Columbia, Brooklyn College and West Point. She was an incredibly hard working woman. When she arrived in Brooklyn, Alethia’s sister Orelia Perry took in Alethia and her family. Alethia quickly became a licensed accountant and served as an auditor for the state of New York where she worked for twenty years. While working as an accountant during the day, Alethia attended Brooklyn College at night where she received degrees in early education and nursing. She became a registered nurse and opened her own day care center in East New York with her daughter Paula.
The above describes her professional accomplishments but her professional success was only half of the story. Above all Alethia believed in serving the Lord, helping the less fortunate and the power of a good education. Alethia served as the book keeper for Beulah Church of the Nazarene for many years. She was extremely charitable and routinely sent gifts to Jamaica to help families facing difficult times. She sponsored numerous children, paying for their books, tuition and providing financial support to help these students attain their degrees. Alethia was a teacher of great renown. She spent most weekends tutoring neighborhood children to assist them in preparation for various exams. A wise and humble woman, Alethia shunned the spotlight preferring to do her good works in private. As the bible says in Matthew 6:3 “3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Alethia epitomized this verse and while we mourn her loss, we take solace that she is receiving her reward for all of her good works in heaven with the Lord.
She is survived by her three children Andrew, Paula and Richard and several grandchildren.
