Born 97 years ago in Park Slope, Brooklyn, Audrey Theola Morrison was the cherished daughter of Edna and Joseph Morrison and baby sister to Joe, Jr.
Audrey had seen countless changes to her neighborhood since 1922 yet her childhood home – and home to her children - remained charmingly intact.
Audrey loved the furnishings her parents placed in the home; the grandfather clock still stands sentry next to the baby grand piano; the crystal candelabras sit on the fireplace mantle, unscathed despite four spirited boys being raised in the house.
A graduate of Georgian Court College, class of 1945. Audrey kept in touch with her college roommate Jean Kay through the years and delighted in telling stories of their times living together in a mansion on campus.
Audrey married John H. McGovern in 1951. At the simple reception in her home, Audrey and John posed for a picture in front of the fireplace mantle, flanked by the crystal candelabras. Touchingly, her son Ward and his new bride Katy recreated the same picture just this past October.
Audrey and John had four sons. Closets full of toy soldiers, baseball gloves, skis and crutches bear testimony to their happy upbringing.
“Call me Audrey” is what she would say. Everyone did. She expected no formality, except on Sunday when everyone was required to dress for dinner.
Audrey had a weakness for silver tea strainers and bolts of chintz and delighted in finding a good bargain.
Audrey was worldly and wise. She knew where to find the best gelato in Florence and the best lemon tart in London. She never wore pants and she always knew the score of the latest Mets game. She liked her chocolate dark and her Typhoo tea with lemon.
But most of all, Audrey loved her boys. Sadly, her son Robert died of cancer in 2015. She is survived by her sons Jack, Ward and Ray, her grandchildren Bobby, Brad, Cali and Paul and her great-grand daughter, Harper.
