Today I am saying a final goodbye to my father-in-law.
Sad times and irreplaceable loss.
He was a strong man,  a leader, a fighter  and a victor all his life.
He lost his last fight surrounded by doctors only. Unreal and sad...

I remember vividly being judged  as a daughter-in-law when we first met; my first French perfume; fresh fruit parcels sent for baby Eva and baby Mark; our first Seder in America; making Mark's Bar Mitzva a reality; and our new house becoming a reality as well...
He was concerned about our Seder in a new house  and  brought home made food from Brooklyn , meeting me in Manhattan after work. 
As his health and memory were gradually declining in the past years , questions about my parents' well being  were always asked.
I feel very fortunate being around my father-in-law all those years, learning , absorbing and, hopefully, passing along all those irreplaceable qualities of a remarkable person.


Dedushka loved his grandchildren SO much. 

I remember the times he would take us younger ones to ride the bumper cars at Coney Island in the summer. It was such a treat. We walked down a street of flea-market storefronts to get there, so much to look at. 

I also remember the summer I stayed over at babushka and dedushka's house to do an informal "internship" to organize and list for sale some of his stamp collection. Even though my workspace was a few feet from the bed I slept in, I wasn't allowed to sleep in late or watch TV. Always had to be "at work" on time- and no slacking! 

Some years ago, when he was still getting around but probably wasn't supposed to be, he insisted on taking me out to lunch by my office. We ate at Blue Water Grill in Union Square. He would always ask me where I worked, I would say I worked for a web site, and he would say- why don't you start your own web site! He was very invested in our talents and potential. I remember being worried about him being on the subway by himself, but he was confident.

Slipping us grandkids some cash before we left his apartment when we visited.
