Doctor Ernest Horowitz, affectionately known as Doc to the community and Ernie to his lifeguard brethren, passed away Sunday, February 25th. He was only 77.
A long time resident of Rockaway, he had sand in his shoes his whole life, and even when he lived away from his beloved beach, his heart remained by the surf.
His was a life of service, beginning in his teens when he lied about his age to begin lifeguarding early. He quickly expanded his role from pulling victims from dangerous waters to teaching and leading others to do the same as an instructor and chief. He carried the joy of this work through the rest of his days.
Later, his service took the form of an MD and he opened a practice in gastroenterology in Glens Falls, NY. Eventually, however, he returned to Rockaway and practiced there until he retired in 2013.
Not content with a medical degree, he joined and was graduated from the University of Albany's pilot biomedical ethics program with a specialization in end of life decisions and care. His thesis shaped NY state policy on this field.
Doc will be remembered for his beach stories, his love for the community and his synagogue, his staunch ethical nature, and his fierce dedication to and advocacy for those lucky enough to call him friend. "Because it's the right thing to do" was the only reason he needed to do anything.
He is survived and mourned by his son, Clifford, daughter Etta, her husband Steve, and their children, Brennan, Doyle, and Cian, as well as the Rockaway community he cherished so dearly.
The family trusted funeral arrangements to IJ Morris and asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Doctors Without Borders, a cause he gave to himself and that embodies his ethical stance.
