OBITUARY

George Poon

September 8, 1962September 23, 2020

George Poon, devoted husband, doting father, caring son, loving brother, and loyal friend, sadly passed away on Wednesday September 23rd, 2020, after a courageous battle with cancer.

George was born in Brooklyn, New York and spent his entire life there. George was the youngest child of Lim Poon, who holds the Guinness world record for time spent surviving on a life raft alone at sea. Upon graduating from Brooklyn Technical High School, George continued to further his education earning his bachelor’s degree from Columbia University and later his master’s degree from New York University. After graduating, he began his career in the financial services industry taking on various positions in the banking, trading, and insurance sectors.

George always put family first. He married and had two sons whom he raised with constant encouragement to chase opportunities in order to grow and learn. Every night, he would call his mother Mary to make sure she was alright, even on the days that he had already spent with her. George loved his family dearly and showed this by pouring his soul into working hard to ensure that they were provided for, free of any worries, and set up for success. George loved traveling and experiencing new and different things. His favorite travel destination was to national parks to hike and to take in nature’s unblemished landscape. George always liked to try to stay active. He biked to work everyday for a total of twelve miles per day, and even in the winter months weather permitting. He loved to ski, play basketball, tennis, and touch football with friends. George was at his best in social activities. He was the go to for remembering names and past events, was always reliable to be the designated driver, and in his younger days was known to be a magnet for girls. George was a humble, peace loving man and will be missed by all his friends and family. George is survived by his wife Helen, his two sons Mitchell and Evan, his mother Mary, his sisters Lillian, Linda and Janet, and by his many beloved nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Sunday October 4th, 2020 from 11:00am - 3:00pm at Joseph G. Duffy, 255 Ninth Street, Brooklyn, NY, 11215.

Due to ongoing COVID restrictions, there is a limit to the number of guests allowed in the venue at one time. Please kindly be prepared to wait if capacity is full when you arrive. Additionally, face masks will be required at all times during your visit.

The sentiments expressed by my colleagues and others in the trade credit community are widely shared. As an employee of George's, I found him to be a warm and friendly presence in our team. Even as AIG continually reorganized, he offered steadiness and instilled confidence in our daily work. In his more recent role and as I build my family, I began to feel our relationship was more collegial and less employer-employee. It is saddening to know that this newfound relationship has come to an end just as it was beginning.

I am so sorry to hear of this tragic and untimely loss. I knew George at AIG, and we co-presented client presentations together over the years. He was a warm and kind person, and he will be greatly missed. The office is shocked and saddened. My sympathies to George's family.

Very sorry to hear about George and regret his having a difficult time over the last months. I worked with George for 20 yrs and he was respected and liked by all. Always upbeat, positive, and quick with a laugh. A man ahead of his time in biking to work everyday from Brooklyn and ever so often I demanded an update -enthralled by that. We spent many hrs talking football- he was a keen fan- and also knew this would get me going by commiserated on NYJets.
Condolences and Best to his family- an unfair and sad loss.

We in the Trade Credit Insurance community are shocked and deeply saddened to learn of George's illness and passing. George was both colleague and friend to many of us, and will be sorely missed. Pre-COVID, we marveled at his commitment to cycling to/from work since the 2005 transit strike in all kinds of weather, and had no idea that he was fighting this battle. Our sincere condolences to the Poon Family. Rest in peace dear George.

Dearest George,

You will be missed by all the people you touched in this life and leave behind an inimitable legacy. Your kindness, compassion, insightfulness, good humor, humbleness and your quiet leadership were very much appreciated and always made you a welcomed member of any circle of people you were involved with. If everyone followed your friendly demeanor and non-judgmental acceptance of others, this would be a much better world.

I was looking forward to the next meeting of our circle of friends, but now sadly can only leave you my well wishes posthumously with the heaviest of hearts and tears. Your passing was not one I was prepared for. It seems God always takes the worthiest ones early, which means it will be a while before we meet again.

Rest in peace my friend!🙏

Our heartfelt condolences to Mitchell, Evan, Helen, and Mary. As childhood friends of Mitchell's, we fondly remember George greeting us at the entrance of the house every time we (frequently) visited. George was always warm and welcoming. He went out of his way to reach out to us and was attentive and supportive. We will miss all of the conversations we've had with him at the dinner table over the years, and we will always remember how his dynamic laugh filled the room with joy. George will be missed greatly, and we are sending all our love. - Wanda, Adam, and Zack

My siblings & I are so blessed to have our brothers-in-law and George is one of them... always considerate, a great listener, so easy going & caring. Yes he would always ask a million questions at our family gatherings which gets us to open up & have some really good conversations. He will be so very missed... I like to think George & Paul are meeting up in heaven somewhere chatting away. They will be forever in our hearts 💕 🙏❤️ precious photo taken this February...
