Harriet Leib

Harriet Leib passed away peacefully at the age of 93.

Born on April 14, 1933, in Brooklyn, New York, to Jean and Benjamin Borah, Harriet grew up with a love of learning encouraged by her mother, who supported her dream of attending college at a time when that path was far less common for women. She graduated from Baruch College and City College with bachelor and master degrees in education and business administration.

During her first semester at Baruch, Harriet met a young man named George Leib, whom she first noticed playing the piano in the student lounge while wearing a particularly stylish jacket. That chance meeting began a love story that blossomed into a remarkable 70-year marriage, providing a foundation of love, devotion, and partnership that became a model for their children and grandchildren.

Harriet dedicated her professional life to education, serving as a teacher and later as an Assistant Principal at Theodore Roosevelt High School in the Bronx, where she worked tirelessly to help students from underserved communities realize their potential.

In retirement, Harriet remained deeply engaged in civic life. She served as President of the Somers Chapter of the League of Women Voters and later as Vice President of the League of Women Voters of Westchester County. In recognition of her many years of community service, Westchester County proclaimed December 15, 2015, as "Harriet Leib Day."

A lifelong bridge enthusiast, Harriet achieved the distinction of Lifetime Master in the American Contract Bridge League in her eighties - a milestone she pursued with characteristic determination.

Harriet treasured her many friendships and the countless travel adventures she shared with George over the years. More than anything, she will be remembered for her intelligence, perseverance, warmth, and the enduring love she shared with her family.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 70 years, George. She is survived by her sons, Howard Leib and Leonard Leib; her daughters-in-law, Marcie and Susan; her grandchildren, Allison (Mark), Abigail (Matt), Benjamin (Monica), and Joshua (Rashel); and her great-grandchildren, Luke, Sebastian, Diego, and Eevee.

A funeral service at Beth Israel chapel for Harriet will be held Thursday, July 23, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM at Beth Israel Cemetery, 1098 Woodbridge Center Dr, Woodbridge Township, NJ 07095, followed by a committal service from 1:40 PM to 2:00 PM.
