

Burke, Joseph Augustine Sr, 8/27/24 - 12/29/11. Born in Dublin, Ireland to Thomas and Chirstina (Lyons), Beloved father of Joseph A. Jr., Stephen (Mary), David, Mary Ann Faga (deceased) (Tommy, deceased), Leslie Tarver (Allen), Thomas and Christopher (Antoinette). Doting grandfather of Lisa, Christopher Mark, Heather, Brian, Matthew, Davey, Jennifer, Paige and Christopher James. Brother of Edward and Christina Mahon. Pre-deceased by sister Cathleen and brothers John and Thomas.
Served in the Army Air Corps in WWII. Retired from U.S. Postal Services as an area manager.
Joe is a past commander of the Michael A. Rawley American Legion Post. He was also a member of the Corrigan-Keenan American Legion Post where he worked hard every year on Toys for Tots. He was 3rd degree Knight in the Columbus Council Knights of Columbus.
During the 60s and 70s, he was known locally in Park Slope for the roses he grew in his yard. He helped start the E. 4th Street Garden Co-op in Kensingtion, where he grew award-winning peppers and other vegetables.
He was an active member of first St. Thomas Aquinas (Park Slope) and then Immaculate Heart of Mary parishes.
He was a beloved character at Denny's Pub where they celebrate Joe Burke Day annually on 8/27.
