Born in Manhattan, Marion was the daughter of the late George Masefield and Phyllis (Pollio) Masefield. She grew up in the Carroll Gardens neighborhood in Brooklyn and graduated from Packer Collegiate Institute. Marion pursued her passion for Chemistry at Long Island University, where she earned her undergraduate degree. She later received a Master's degree from Fordham University and became a devoted NYC public elementary school teacher.
Throughout her life, Marion spent her time educating everyone around her in a myriad of topics. She was an expert in her beloved opera, classical music and chemistry, as well as in the culinary arts, fine arts, prose, poetry, English language arts, history, embroidery, etiquette and many other subjects. She had a brilliant mind with an extraordinary memory and until her passing, could instantly recount details of almost any subject. She was also an active member of St. Saviour’s Church community in Park Slope when her children were young.
Marion was predeceased by her devoted husband, John L. Piccard.
Marion is survived by her loving children, John (Kate) Piccard and Paul (Laura) Piccard, as well as her five beloved grandchildren, John, Laura, Julia, Caroline, and Harrison Piccard of whom she was incredibly proud.
In addition, over the last 30 years, Marion especially appreciated the constant companionship of her two beloved dogs, Freckles and Frances, who predeceased her.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at the Joseph G. Duffy Funeral Home, 255 9th St, Brooklyn, NY, on Sunday, April 23rd from 2-5 and 7-9 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in honor of Marion's life at St. Francis Xavier Church on Monday, April 24th, at 10 AM. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Metropolitan Opera, an organization dear to Marion’s heart which brought her much joy, or to the North Shore Animal League where she was fortunate to find her beloved pets.
May she rest in peace.
