Rena Chernoff, one of the youngest survivors of the Holocaust, passed away on July 3, 2017, three days shy of her 84th birthday. Emerging from the terror of the Shoah, Rena lived a courageous life, earning a master’s degree and becoming a New York City school teacher, while raising a family. She lectured widely about her captivity in the ghetto of Tomaszow Mazowiecki, Poland, the Blizyn labor camp and the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp; served as a docent at the Museum of Jewish Heritage – A Living Memorial to the Holocaust, and, with her son, wrote The Tailors of Tomaszow: A Memoir of Polish Jews.
Rena was a devoted, loving wife to Benjamin Chernoff, who predeceased her; proud mother of son Allan, daughter Helen, daughter-in-law Robin and son-in-law Denis; and joyful grandmother of Daria, Adriano, Betsy and Elana.
