Richard D. Alba, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2024, in Brooklyn, New York, with his family by his side. He was 82.
Richard was known for his warmth, integrity, and deep commitment to justice and community. He spent his life thinking deeply about the world and caring deeply for the people in it. Whether through his work, his writing, or the simple gift of conversation, he touched countless lives.
In his later years, Richard found great joy in returning to New York City and becoming part of the Good Neighbors of Park Slope, where he formed lasting friendships and gave generously of his time and energy.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Gwen Moore; his daughter, Sarah Alba, and son-in-law, Dmitri Lemmerman; his son, Michael Alba, and daughter-in-law, Jessica Alba; his grandchildren, Cyrus Alba, Marcus ter Schure, and Oscar ter Schure; and his brother, John Gebbia.
A public memorial gathering will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations in Richard’s memory to the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, a place that reflects his lifelong love of learning, community, and the arts.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
