OBITUARY

Robert W Martin

October 6, 1946April 28, 2019

On April 28th, 2019, Robert “Buster” Martin, departed this life at age 72, after a courageous 16 month battle with Cancer. After receiving his diagnosis in January of 2018, Buster bravely chose to participate in a clinical trial of treatment, which, not only extended his life, but will help others in the future. He spent his final days at his home, surrounded by his devoted family, and the movies and music he loved.

Buster was born at Methodist hospital in Park Slope, Brooklyn, to Eleanor and Robert C. Martin and had two brothers, Richard and Kevin. After tragically losing her husband to Cancer in 1959, Ella married James Murphy, who also had two sons, Gregory and Jimmy, and the family soon welcomed a new son, Martin Murphy, in 1961.

Buster attended St. Thomas Catholic School and was a member of the third graduating class of Xaverian High School in 1963. He served in the United States Air Force from1967 -1971, and then began working for NY Telephone (later Verizon), where he remained until his retirement in 2011, at which time, he embarked on a full time career as Grandpa to his beloved grandson Finnian.

Buster and Isabella grew up just a few blocks from each other and began dating as teenagers. They were married in December of 1968 at Holy Family Church in Park Slope. They started their family and eventually established their home in that same neighborhood, where they spent happy decades together, hosting many joyous family celebrations in their home on Jackson Place.

Buster is survived by his devoted wife of over 50 years, Isabella, his loving children, Colleen and Robert, their spouses, Kevin and Alicia, and grandsons, Finn and Liam. Buster was also a beloved brother, uncle, cousin, nephew, brother-in-law, neighbor, and friend. Buster is pre-deceased by his father, Robert, mother, Eleanor, brother Richard, stepfather James, step-brother, Jimmy, and many other beloved aunts, uncles and cousins.

Isabelle, although too many years have passed since you, Buster and I lived in the same neighborhood, I want to offer my condolences. Our families lived on 13 street together and Buster was close by and a wonderful person to know. It was so nice to read about your lives together for so many years raising a wonderful family and having so many fond memories. I am so sorry for your loss.

Uncle Buster was always in my eyes the patriarch of our family. Having not grown up knowing my grandparents he was the source of knowledge to a crazy, exciting , at times unconventional family. I loved siting and listening to all the stories he shared, and will never forget how proud he made me feel to be apart of such an amazing family. He remembered every date, important event, and milestone in my life and ALWAYS wanted an update on what was new and exciting with me. I’ll forever treasure the time spent, the traditions shared, and the Thanksgiving’s together. I love you Uncle Buster , it’s not goodbye it’s see you later.
