Tatyana Filippova was born in Guriev, Kazakhstan, on September 2, 1948. She moved to Ukraine at age 2. She studied and taught several languages, including English and German. In 1992, Tatyana moved to New York. Since she was already fluent in English, Tatyana was able to start working soon after arrival and spent several years working with special needs adults as an educator at the Young Adult Institute. Tatyana then completed a Master’s Degree in Special Education at age 50 and worked as an Early Intervention educator for years until retirement.
Tatyana loved living in New York, attending a plethora of cultural events at every opportunity. She loved to travel and share her many experiences. She was proud of her friends and their deep connections and interesting discussions on various topics. Tatyana was curious and brave, often swimming out to deeper waters, traveling and going places alone, taking walks late at night. She had a great appreciation of and spiritual need for nature. Fresh air, trees and especially the ocean were her lifelines. Tatyana often remarked about how lucky she was to be living near the beach and took every opportunity to indulge in swimming.
Tatyana was very independent, proud and self-reliant. She listened to people's advice but always did what she thought was best. Tatyana maintained her independence until nearly the very end and lived life on her own terms.
Tatyana was a loving and fiercely protective mother and grandmother whose biggest joy was spending time with her grandkids. She will be missed and forever loved by her two daughters Anna and Yelena and her four grandchildren, Elizabeth, Isabella, Rafael and Gianni. May her memory be a blessing.
A visitation for Tatyana will be held Friday, February 23, 2024 from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Cusimano & Russo Funeral Home, 2005 West 6th St, Brooklyn, NY 11223.
