Vito Antonio Monaco passed away peacefully on February 2, 2021. His wish to be cared for at home was fulfilled with dignity and grace at the hands of his loving wife, Maria Nieves, whom he called Maruja. Vito and his wife exemplified lifelong lessons to their family of true devotion and unwavering dedication as together they fought the unforgiving battle of his Alzheimer's disease.
Born in Calabritto, Provincia de Avellino, Italy, Vito emigrated to the United States by way of Caracas, Venezuela, with his wife and their young daughters, Rosa and Alely. Diana, their youngest daughter, was born in Manhattan before the family finally settled into his beloved Park Slope home in 1968.
His enduring phrase, "it is better to own than to rent," was only a glimpse into his dream of securing a better life from which to grow his family. A family both he and his wife started 63 years ago.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Maruja, their daughters Rosa, Alely, and Diana, his sons-in-law Richie, Chris, and Phil. He was beloved Abuelo to his grandchildren Jacqueline with husband Steven, Victoria with husband Richard, Christopher with partner Nelcy, Alexandra, Olivia, and John. His chest swelled with pride as his family continued to grow with his great-grandchildren Alyssa, Genesis, and Aurora. Vito is also survived by sister Maria Gonnella, brother Alfredo Monaco, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his sister Clara Quadara and his parents Antonio and Rosa Monaco.
His legacy lives on through the family he created and loved.
We will continue to make you proud.
