July 3, 1933 – September 23, 2026
Beloved mother, grandmother, and aunt, Amada G. Hinojosa, 93, passed away peacefully in her home in Brownsville, Texas, on September 23, 2026.
Amada was born to the late Josefa and Emilio Gonzalez on July 3, 1933, in Brownsville, Texas. She was the third of six children and was preceded in death by her siblings: Juan Gonzales, Guadalupe Medrano, Luisa Cano, Santos Gonzalez, and Emilio Gonzalez.
After graduating from Brownsville High School, Amada attended Texas Southmost College.
She was married to the late Manuel Hinojosa.
Widowed at a young age, Amada dedicated her entire life to raising her two children, Manuel Hinojosa Jr. and Leticia Hinojosa, who survive her. She worked tirelessly to ensure her children were happy and successful, fully accomplishing her life's goal. With her support and encouragement, her son established his own business, where Amada continued to work well into her 90s. Her daughter, Leticia Hinojosa, attended college and law school, financed and supported to a large degree by Amada’s hard work and sacrifice. When Leticia decided to pursue public office, Amada was always by her side, working campaigns and standing for hours at election polls, asking proudly yet humbly, “Please vote for my daughter.”
In addition to her children, she is survived by her beloved daughter-in-law, Carmen Hinojosa, who loved and cared for her always and her son-in-law, John Arias Quiroga. She is also survived by her goddaughter Diana López, numerous other nieces, nephews. and her grandchildren, Amanda and Manuel Hinojosa III, who were her ultimate pride and joy.
Amada was usually too busy for hobbies, though she maintained a lifelong love for dancing and her “maquinitas.” Her true passions were working hard and helping others. During the winter, she made sure that the homeless individuals who camped near her son’s business had warm clothing and blankets. Come tax season, people flocked to her to prepare their income tax returns. Even when she could have used the extra income, she always did them free of charge. She had a ready smile and a warm hello for everyone, living by her motto, “las saludes no se le niegan a nadie” (a greeting is never denied to anyone).
Her keen mind was legendary. Just last year, when asked by her daughter about her earliest memories, she vividly described the birth of her sister Luisa, which occurred when Amada was only three years old. Her many lifelong friends stand as a testament to her profound loyalty, her devotion to others, and her ability to make everyone laugh with her quick wit.
Her family is forever indebted to her medical providers, especially to Dr. Hussein and Dr. Reuben, whose dedicated care granted them an additional four happy years with their mother. The family also extends their deepest gratitude to the angels who cared for her every need: Maria Luisa, Viviana, Maty, Cristina, and Olga.
In the end, Amada was immensely happy that, as she always said, her “little family” was close and united—and that it would remain that way. This was the last reassurance made to her before she departed in peace. She leaves behind nothing but beautiful, lasting memories.
