I remember "Donny" from long ago.  I was 13; he was 16.  He moved fast through the house--like he always knew where he was going!  I was watching in awe.  I am the son of Mildred & Charles Stith, retired professor of Symbolic Logic and History of Philosophy.  
My memories end with hearing that he moved to Texas. As "Ed" said above, I didn't know why, or where Brownsville, Texas might be.  
I am sorry from afar, didn't know him well but I remember him well!

MY UNCLE DON AKA “UNC”

  When I was a young child back in Akron, Ohio I use to go to Balch Street on Sundays and see a lot of my relatives at Grandma Stith's house.  It always seemed the Aunts' and Uncles' families would gather for quality family outings.  The outings were sometimes at Aunt Marilyn and Uncle Joe's home in Clinton.  I often think it was because of the location, out in the woods and acreage of land for all to enjoy.  I remember looking for coins in sand boxes, rope climbing contests, egg hunts, and poker games.  I often felt that someday I would be old enough to play in those poker games.  Those were some great times and days!  I remember the day when Aunt Helen and Uncle Don loaded up the kids and left for Brownsville.  It did not seem to be any big deal to a 10 year old like myself at that time.  I was young and did not understand the impact of it or the reasoning why.  Besides who the heck knew where Brownsville Texas was?  
  I remember a grouchy Uncle Don that I always thought he was the meanest man I had ever been around.  He had that stare that made me think I was in trouble even if I wasn't.  He was very unapproachable, but what the heck did I know?  Nothing at all as I would learn later in life!  My Uncle Don was far more approachable and had the BIGGEST, KINDEST HEART of any man I have ever met!  As years went by I use to look forward to seeing that grouchy Uncle, when he would visit Ohio.  Quite often when he got into town, “UNC” would get together with my father Ollie, they would be the hit of the party, often their OWN PARTY!  I must say for the record, every time UNCLE DON came to town, my mom went crazy!   I am quite sure that the party probably started again on September 12th, 2014!  Someday we all get to be together again!  
  When I finally started to understand life and really thought I knew something, I figured I would impress my Uncle Don.  I would often visit Brownsville in the early and mid 90's when UNC had his scrap business and I would go with him on occasion out and about to various places looking at scrap to buy.  I'll never forget one day I was with him and this box I opened was marked aluminum which was worth about $1.00 a pound.  I was rummaging through the box and I found some brass mixed in with it and I let Uncle Don know that there was what I thought was brass in the box.  He grabs the box and looks at it and tells me I don't know what the hell brass is.  Well I had been in the Marine Corps for about 13 Years at that time.  Uncle Don, to this day, I swear there was brass mixed in with that aluminum.  I have been to the Pistol and Rifle Range lots of times.  I don't know how you did it in the Air Force but Marines don't have MAIDS, we police our own BRASS!  Later that day he told me “FANCY PANTS, keep your mouth shut, you're going to cost me money!”  Brass was worth about $1.80 a pound then and he didn't want to pay brass prices for aluminum.  Of course, once again, he had that GROUCHY STARE!   
Yes, I let my Uncle call me “FANCY PANTS”  he was just jealous of that “SCARLET STRIPE” that Marine NCO and Officers wear on the side of their Dress Blue Trousers.  (The significance of the Stripe is it represents the unusually high Casualty rate of Marines in Battle of Chapultepec.)   “UNC” would even sign and mail a letter that I wrote to a Judge in Ohio from him.  The letter asked the Judge to give a certain nephew leniency because Uncle Don was going to hire him and that Judge allowed him to go work for Uncle Don because it got the nephew out of Ohio, more importantly, it kept him out of the Judge's courtroom.  Matt sends his thanks for that!  I spent a lot of time talking with “UNC”, granted more on the phone than in person as I would rather do.  I know that FAMILY, ELKS and FRIENDS meant the world to “UNC”!  He would do anything for any of them!  “UNC” WAS A TRUE FRIEND!   HE MEANT THE WORLD TO ME!  I AM GOING TO MISS HIM AND OUR TALKS!   I LOVE YOU UNCLE DON!  I KNOW YOU ARE WATCHING OVER US ALL!

Our heartfelt condolences and prayers to the family. Billy and I have lost a dear friend that we loved very much. He was very much a part in our lives. I don't think there is anybody in the world that didn't love Don. We will always remember all the great times we had together. He'll be greatly missed! Love, Love you Don!

I will always remember Don as the great person I've had come to know him as.....my condolences to Billy and the family......

Don made me proud to be an Elk. We served together on my first House Committee back in the early 90'sand we didn't miss many Lodge meetings the rest of that decade. When Don's business was doing well he donated to everything. He was generous..to a fault. When things weren't so well he donated his time but he always supported the Lodge. He went through some tough times. He lost his daughter Judy, he lost his business & propery. He lost his wife, Mary Helen, but he never lost the spirit of chatity and brotherly love and still helped others whenever he could. Then we lost the Lodge. And now we've lost Don. 

June & I really miss you old friend & brother. I hope you get to sing duets with Louis Armstrong! If anyone deserves to rest in peace in a wonderful world,it's you.

So sorry to hear about Don's passing. Such a nice man. He will be missed by many. My heartfelt condolences go out to the whole family.

 I am saddened to hear of Don's passing. Since I heard, my mind is constantly remembering the times that we had with Don, I so enjoyed listening to all of his stories from the past. I am truly proud to have known him. To all the family, we offer our deepest and heartfelt sympathies to all of you. Your father was a dear true friend, his generosity and continued giving to all in need, was truly, his trademark. He will be sadly missed by all.
