Frank Washington, Jr. (Frankie) was born on December 22, 1956, the son of Frank Sr, and Careleigh Hooks Washington. Frank has one sibling, Lygia (Gia) Thomas. Born in Philadelphia, Pa., Frankie was very active and sometimes mischievous as a youth. In the early 60’s the family moved from Philly to Arlington, Va. (a suburb of Washington, DC). The Washingtons were road runners, going back and forth between Philly, DC and North Carolina. Frankie would urge his father to speed in his black Chevy Malibu when traveling. He developed the need for speed and loved to go fast!
In 1967, Frank Jr., Careleigh Hooks and Lygia Thomas moved to Neptune Avenue in Oxon Hill, MD. Frank was multi-faceted, he was an athlete in high school, where he ran track. He was so good that he was offered a track scholarship at Citrus Junior College, in Azusa, Ca. It was no surprise when he bought a motorcycle and he and his cousin Steven would ride all over DC, Maryland and points unknown. In 1975, Frank graduated from Oxon Hill High School. But it was his love for basketball, that lasted through the test of time. He joined basketball leagues wherever he could; he took his playing very serious. Later in life he would mentor youths in the game of basketball. Frank’s penchant for the game overlapped with his love for all sports. He was an avid fan.
After attending ITT Technical School, he landed a job at NASA and his long career as an IT professional began. Frank gained valuable experience at the many positions he secured as an IT/Network technician. As a young man, Frank was known for being a fix-it type of guy. Between stints as an IT professional, he worked with his father and uncle James (Jimmy) Hooks in the construction industry. Ever the comedian and personable guy, Frank gave himself the nick name “Frankie Moon, from Neptune”. That name would stick with him among family for his entire life.
In the early 2000’s during the tech boom, Frank relocated to Dallas, Texas for new employment opportunities. He found a surplus of positions in the Dallas area. It was there that he met, and eventually married Maria Gamez. Although the marriage didn’t last, they remained life-long friends.
Ever the resilient soul, after his marriage ended, Frank relocated to South Padre Island, Tx. He used his prior experience to secure a job with the South Padre Island Police Department, as a Network Systems Administrator.
In 2007, Frank married Maria Aguirre, and they had a daughter in 2009 – Karllen Marie. Her birth would change Franks’ life forever. He became smitten and was a doting father to Karllen. Even after his marriage ended, Frank continued co-parenting. You would always find him and Karllen at dinner, exploring nearby attractions or trying to entice his daughter to join him in his later love of cycling. Ask anyone that knew Frank – his lifeline was his “Princess”!
Frank is survived by his beloved daughter Karllen Marie and “adopted” son Justin De La Rosa; his sibling, “Sister-Dear” Lygia (Gia) Thomas; his adoring uncle and aunt, Robert Hooks and Safia Abdullah; his niece and nephew, Tori Kenner and Malik Thomas, plus a plethora of family and friends from all walks of life.
A memorial service for Frank will be held Saturday, March 19, 2022 from 3:00 PM to 5:30 PM at Funeraria Del Angel Buena Vista, 125 Mcdavitt Blvd., Brownsville, TX 78521.
