August 2, 1932 – September 27, 2026
Gilbert Canchola, lovingly known to our family as Uncle Gil, passed away peacefully at the age of 94, having celebrated his birthday in August.
Born in Brownsville, Texas, Gilbert attended Saint Joseph’s Academy before enlisting in the United States Air Force. A veteran of the Korean War and a graduate of the University of San Francisco, he spent much of his working life with JCPenney, dedicating approximately 28 years to the company, from 1966 to 1994. His work ethic was second to none, and he rose quickly within the company, establishing himself as a valued and trusted asset. He brought that same dedication to caring for his beloved sister and family.
He is survived by his son, Gibby Canchola, whom he was very proud of and loved deeply; his beloved sister, Mary Pearl Miller (Roland); and his nephews and niece, Roland Miller (Rosie), Dana Miller Suarez (Albert), Ronald Miller (Shellie), Randy Miller (Kristin), and Rick Miller (Cristal). He and Gibby enjoyed talking football, especially about the Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers.
His nephews and niece adored Uncle Gil dearly. As their families grew, he showed their children the same love and attention he had always shown them. He took an interest in their lives, celebrated their accomplishments, and made sure each generation knew they had a loving uncle who cared about them.
Our love for Uncle Gil goes well beyond the words of this obituary. He was a rock for our family. His holiday visits, stories about his life and work, and laughter gave us memories we will always treasure. In his own ways, he made sure each of us knew how much he loved us.
He never forgot a birthday or Christmas. Whether through a card, a phone call, or a shared laugh, Uncle Gil always found a way to stay close. He made a point to be there for family graduations. When he couldn’t attend in person, he still recognized the occasion with a thoughtful gift, making sure we knew he was thinking of us.
He was selfless, loving, and generous. His advice helped carry us through good times and challenging ones. His life touched so many, and we will carry his love and the lessons he taught us for the rest of our lives.
As we say goodbye, we take comfort in Christ’s promise of a place in his Father’s house. We entrust Uncle Gil to God’s loving care and pray that he rests in peace, surrounded by the love he so freely shared with us.
We love you, Uncle Gil. We miss you. God bless you and keep you always.
