US Army Master Sgt. (Ret.) Jesus M. Garcia passed on September 17, 2026, at the age of 73. Born on September 2, 1953, in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico, his military career took him & his family throughout the United States, Panama and Germany. He was a resident of Brownsville, Texas for over 25 years.
United States Army Veteran Jesus M. Garcia, known to his family and friends as “Jesse” or “Meme”, will be remembered with great honor as a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, dedicated public servant, and steadfast advocate for his fellow veterans. His life reflected a deep commitment to duty, service, family, and country.
Mr. Garcia proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1971 to 1993, dedicating more than two decades of his life to military service. Following his retirement from the Army, he continued his commitment to public service as a government employee from 1994 until his retirement in 2019. His many years of service were a testament to his strong work ethic, sense of responsibility, and dedication to others.
His commitment to those who served alongside him continued long after his military career. Mr. Garcia was a proud and dedicated member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), where he worked to support and advocate for his fellow veterans. He had the honor of serving as Commander of local chapter #121 and later continued his service as Jr. Vice Commander of the DAV Department of Texas. His involvement with the DAV was a meaningful part of his life and reflected the loyalty, brotherhood, and sense of duty that he carried with him throughout the years. Some of these DAV comrades became his best friends.
Beyond his distinguished years of service, Jesse found his greatest pride and joy in his family. He shared 56 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Vicky, building a life together rooted in love, devotion, and companionship. He was a hardworking & dedicated father to Jesse B. and Michelle Liza. He was an immensely proud grandfather to Santino, Nico & Vitali, treasuring them and the special memories they created together. He also cherished the memories he made with his bonus grandchildren, Autumn and Paris.
In his leisure time, Mr. Garcia enjoyed traveling and watching sports, especially football. Having had a second career at one time as a referee and umpire, he had a special appreciation for all sports. He valued the opportunity to see new places, enjoy a good game, and spend quality time surrounded by those he loved most. He was a great cultivator of friendships. One such example - after meeting over 45 years ago, he & Vicky would still visit with lifelong friends Roberto & Tencha Salazar and Rudy & Maria González.
Jesse cherished every opportunity to create lasting memories with Vicky, his son Jesse, daughter Michelle and grandsons Santino, Nico & Vitali. He loved taking them on family trips, including memorable vacations to Disneyland and Walt Disney World. Earlier this year, they shared the special experience of traveling together to Madrid, Spain. These adventures were more than simply trips to him; they were opportunities to have his family together, enjoy new experiences, and create memories they would carry with them for a lifetime.
The love he had for his three grandsons was immeasurable, and he took great pride in being present for the moments that mattered to them. He especially loved watching Santino and Nico play soccer, proudly cheering them on from the sidelines. With Vitali, some of the sweetest moments were often the simplest— laughing and enjoying each other's company. Each of his grandsons shared a unique and special bond with their Grandpa, and the love, laughter, and memories they shared with him will forever remain close to their hearts.
To his family, whether it was as “Dad”, “Grandpa“ “Jesse”, “Meme”, or “Tio”, he was a source of love, guidance, laughter, and countless treasured memories that will continue to be shared for generations to come.
Jesse is survived by his wife of 56 years, Vicky A.; his son, Jesse B.; his daughter, Michelle Liza; and his grandsons, Santino Alec, Nico Valentin, and Vitali Miliano. He is also survived by his uncle, Antonio Sierra (Gloria); his brothers, Rogelio "Roy" Vela Jr. (Rosie); Joe Dick "Coy" Ruiz (Sylvia), Nicolas "Cuate" Vela; his sisters, Maria Eugenia "Keña" Egly (Peter), Maria Esther "Tere" Hidalgo (Trinidad), and Maria Lourdes "Lula" Hughes (John); and his nephew, Augusto C. Celis (Claudia); numerous cousins, among them Santiago “Chago” González and Antonio “Pájaro” Sierra, numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews; and many other beloved family members and loved ones who will forever cherish his memory.
Jesse was preceded in death by his father, Jesus C. Garcia; his mother, Ciria S. Vela; his father, Rogelio Vela; his sister, Maria Luisa Garcia; beloved mother figure, Inez Bernal; his aunt, Carmela Vela; his nephews, Armando Celis and Gilberto Celis; his father-in-law, Isidoro G. Urbano, and mother-in-law, Ernestina Urbano.
Visitation will be held at Funeraria Del Angel Buena Vista, 125 McDavitt Blvd., Brownsville, Texas 78521, on Saturday, September 19, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with full Military Honors at 6:00 p.m. all services conclude after visitation.
