

Pedro was born and grew up in Mission, Texas, where he excelled as a student. He graduated from Mission High School in the top two of his class as Salutatorian, Class President, and Boy’s State Representative. During high school, he worked part-time to help his mother and father. Pedro was accepted to numerous universities after he graduated the top of his class. In fact, he was accepted to the prestigious West Point Military Academy. However, after high school, Pedro chose to help his country by joining the U.S. Army. He volunteered to join the army during the Korean War. He fought in the Korean War for two years in extremely harsh conditions where he was decorated for his valor. After the war, he entered the University of Texas-Pan American. He finished his degree with majors in Spanish and History with highest honors. Soon after he finished his degree, he was employed by the U.S. Government. He found the love of his life Alicia, and married her on December 7, 1958. They were married for 56 years. He worked for the U.S. Government for over 30 years as a dedicated employee. He retired at the age of 55. He quickly decided to work on his Master’s degree in English. Once he finished his Master’s degree, Pedro taught at the University of Texas-Brownsville. He also volunteered his time at his church, schools, and through the Rotary Club.
Pedro was a dedicated father, grandfather, and humanitarian. He had a witty sense of humor. He enjoyed walking daily. Pedro also enjoyed reading, writing poetry, and drawing during his free time.
He is survived by his beautiful, dedicated wife of 56 years, Alicia M. Vásquez; children, Peter Vásquez, Leticia (Joseph+) Vásquez-Jones, Dr. Fernando (Alexis) Vásquez, Rosie (Alirio) Vásquez Leon, and Dr. Selina (Jaime) Vásquez Mireles, and eight grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Friday, November 14, 2014 from 2:00p.m. to 9:00p.m. with a Rosary to be conducted at 7:00p.m. at Funeraria Del Angel Buena Vista.
Mass will be held Saturday, November 15, 2014, at 11:00a.m. at St.Mary’s, Mother of the Church (1914 Barnard Rd.), followed by entombment at Buena Vista Burial Park.
