Rose H. Melendez, 76, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2026, at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Brownsville, Texas, surrounded by the love of her family.
Rose was born on September 20, 1949, in Sinton, Texas, to Esperanza Carreon and Alberto Mireles. She had a love for traveling and it was during one of life’s journeys that she met the love of her life, George D. Melendez, in San Antonio, Texas. They were united in marriage on December 31, 1976, in Brownsville, Texas and shared 55 years of love, devotion, and cherished memories together.
Rose dedicated much of her life to serving others through her work in politics and had an extraordinary compassion for animals. Affectionately known as “Mrs. Meow Meow,” she and her beloved husband lovingly cared for the neighborhood cats by feeding them and ensuring they were spayed and neutered. Her kindness and generosity touched countless lives, both human and animal.
Above all else, Rose’s greatest joy was her family. She especially treasured her only daughter, Ana Capistran, whom she loved beyond measure. She spent countless hours proudly speaking of Ana and cherished every moment they shared together.
Rose will forever be remembered for her unwavering faith in God, her compassionate spirit, her servant’s heart and the unconditional love she gave to her family and everyone that was blessed to have known her.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her devoted husband, George D. Melendez; her loving daughter, Ana Capistran (Joe Capistran); her granddaughters, Priscilla Garza (Eduardo Garza), Kara Venegas (Eder Venegas), and Joanna Capistran; and her beloved great-grandsons, Giuseppe, Eduardo Jr., and George Daniel Garza.
