

Ruth Contreras was born March 12, 1922, in Sipsey, Alabama to Felipe Contreras and Etter Hansford Contreras. In the early morning hours of May 13, 2013 our loving Father called His child Ruth home after her lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s.
Ruth’s last employment was with Luby’s Cafeteria as hostess, where she worked for over 17 years.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents Felipe and Etter Hansford Contreras and brothers John Contreras of Brownsville; Henry Contreras, Sr. of Michigan; Andrew Contreras of San Antonio and three sisters, Esther Ottoman of San Antonio; Mary Ortiz of California and Rachel Putzel of Brownsville; her grandson John Mathew Burke Kizer of Brownsville; sister-in-law Irma Contreras of California; brother-in-law Mike Ortiz of California; and her sister-in-law Manuela Contreras of Michigan.
She is survived by her four children: Mary Jean Harrison of Houston; Carolyn Kizer and husband James Kizer of Brownsville; Tommy Cortez and wife Melva Cortez of Del Rio and Hugh Cortez of Houston. Her brother Paul Contreras of California; sister Rebecca Contreras of Brownsville; a sister-in-law Jean Contreras of Georgia; and a sister-in-law Concha Contreras of San Antonio; five grandchildren, David Kizer and Kimberly Kizer of Brownsville; Alcelyn Cortez of Brownsville; Seth and Josh Cortez of Del Rio; six great-grandchildren and several nephews and nieces.
Visitation will be held Thursday, May 16, 2013 from 4 pm to 9pm at Funeraria Del Angel Buena Vista with a Prayer Service at 7pm.
A Christian Memorial Service will take place on Friday, May 17, 2013 at 10am at Funeraria Del Angel Buena Vista with a Committal Service to follow to Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
A Special thanks to all the wonderful CNA’s at Sunshine Haven.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Ruth’s Memory to Sunshine Haven, at P.O. Box 4478, Brownsville, Texas 78523. Sunshine Haven is a 24 hour care facility for the terminally ill and is a 501-c Non-Profit Charity.
