resident of Brownsville Texas, beloved husband of Martha De La Garza, father of Maruzella De La Garza, Samuel (Laurie) De La Garza, Celeste (Ryan) Santa Ana, Martha (John) McKinney, Margarita (Scott) Povish, María de Lourdes (Don) Cabadas-Ferguson, and Rafael Loera. Dear grandfather of Nicole and Natalie McKinney, Scott and Brian Povish, Genevieve Cabadas, Amelianna and Santos De La Garza; and Martha and James Santa Ana.
Sergio was born in Torreón Coahuila to María Luisa Flores y Salvador De La Garza who preceded him in death along with younger brother and sister-in-law Gustavo (Olga) De La Garza. He is also survived by his sister, Ma Del Carmen VD. de Garcia.
Sergio left Mexico at a young age to play with the New York Yankees (farm league). He quickly became a well-known and respected Detroiter as a result of his numerous contributions to the community and activism to promote the Hispanic voice and culture in Michigan. He founded the popular Mexican restaurant Xochimilco, was a famous radio personality with WIID on the program Serenata de Mi Barrio, and retired from the Ford Motor Company. It was through his love of music and spreading the pride of his homeland and culture that he met his wife, Martha. They were married for 38 years.
Sergio was also very active in the Catholic Church. While in Detroit, he was a longtime parishioner of St. Anne de Detroit and a member of the Knights of Columbus. When he moved to Brownsville in 1993, he became a member of St. Mary's Parish, was a member of the Men's Club, served as a Eucharistic Minister, lector, and traveled to nursing homes sharing his faith.
His health had been deteriorating for quite some time, but it is with deep faith and gratitude that we know he is home with the Father free of all pain and suffering.
Due to COVID restrictions, the family will have a small service.
