Tomas was born on December 2, 1940 in Brownsville, Texas, and was the son of Cenobio Flores and Josefa Montes, whom he deeply respected and he modeled his life. He was one of four children, acting as a loving brother to Teresa (Jesus Antonio) Amado (Esperanza) Mario (Blanca). He was a loving father to Alpha Flores Cervantes (Jerry Cervantes) and a very loving grandpa to Nathan Cervantes (Erin Fernandez Cervantes) and his most cherished Great grandchildren Lani, Lina, and Liam.
Education was of utmost importance to him, and as a Teacher at Porter High School, he was a beacon of light to the students he impacted. He always encouraged his students to take an active role in their own learning. As an educator he is best described as the catalyst that cultivated the lives of his students.
He met his lovely wife Linda in 1959 as they were both employed at Hargroves office supply. They were married in 1960 and happily together for 52 years, as Linda, his beloved wife, was called home to be with her Lord and Savior in 2012. Most admirable of Tomas was the most profound love and care he showed for his wife as he provided loving care in her last few years of life. He truly emulated Christlike character and was the epitome of a loving husband. Through their devotion to each other and strong faith in the Lord, they modeled a righteous marriage for their daughter, Alpha and husband Jerry, as well as, their grandson Nathan.
Nathan, was the joy of their lives in their golden years, and as such Tomas was the benefactor of great love and cherished memories made as Nathan spent much time under their care. Equally blessed was Nathan for having such wonderful and Godly grandparents.
The corner stone of Tomas' life and the family he built with Linda was his deep faith and love for the Lord. He enjoyed reading scripture and was especially fond of his wife's talent of playing the piano to endless hours of hymn music in their home, as his wife was the church pianist for many years.
Tomas also showed Christ love through devotion to his family, for whom he would cook delicious meals, tend to the needs of his home, and would lend a helping hand in any way he could. His many nephews and nieces and extended family and friends, were also shown this Christlike character. For Tomas knew that as a Christian we are instructed to emulate Christlike behavior, and it was most evident in all he did.
One of Tomas' all time favorite pastimes was spending weekends at the Riverside golf course. He spent several decades of enjoyment there. He once said, that the beautiful cut fields of a golf course reminded him just a little bit of Heaven. Then again, he could only imagine, because he knew the following scripture well,...
" No eye has seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for them that love Him."
( 1 Corinthians 2:9 )
His legacy will continue through his siblings, daughter, son -in-law, grandson and his wife, great grandchildren, beloved nieces and nephews, and his many close friends from the golf course and in the Brownsville community.
