Virginia Lea Thornton

Virginia Lea Thornton, 71, of Harlingen, Texas, went to be with the Lord on June 30, 2026. Born on December 16, 1954, in Brownsville, Texas, Virginia was the youngest of three siblings, who affectionately referred to her as “Sissy”.

Virginia enjoyed a vibrant life and especially cherished spending time with her neighbors and dear friends through engaging conversation, laughter and grins over tacos and drinks, and simply celebrating life. She enjoyed a good story, smooth jazz and blues music that touched the soul, and clowning around with her friends with an unmistakable spirit and smile that would light up all her surroundings. She was meticulously organized, a dependable worker, and a faithful friend. Virginia was a special person to confidently depend upon when it really counted or even when it did not matter so much. She was always present, reliable, and ready to help, and she maintained a refreshing authenticity about life that was a testament to her amazing strength of character. Virginia loved animals and cared for many dogs throughout her life including her favorite dog Norman, who passed just 2 years ago after 13 wonderful years of companionship.

Virginia was an artist with words, spending a lifetime in her journaling and poetry and collecting little insights and proverbs for life. Even as we mourn her loss, perhaps we can take some comfort from a 1982 entry in which Virginia shared some of her wisdom with us, “Sometimes a cry for help is misunderstood. ...Occasionally, people don’t want a specific answer for their question. ...An outstretched hand, an ear that listens, and understanding that is not always, necessarily, understood. That’s the secret behind faith. That’s the truth behind God.” May we all find peace with the faithfulness and love of the Lord, even if we do not understand why He took Virginia in this way.

After graduating from Brownsville High School in 1973, Virginia set out with her zest for life through additional school and work experiences across the state of Texas, to Arizona, Alaska, and even a stint in Mexico with a hunting and fishing expedition all before settling back into Texas. Virginia worked for Sterling McCall Lexus in Houston for many years where she was a valued co-worker before moving back to the Valley to work for Charlie Clark Nissan in Harlingen for another 14 years. Most recently, Virginia worked as an accountant for JKJ Workforce in Harlingen, TX, where she cherished her experience and her treasured friendship with Senor, whom she loved dearly.

Virginia was preceded in death by her loving older brother William R. (Bob) Thornton, Jr.; her sweet mother Virginia Collins Thornton, and her caring father William R. (Bob) Thornton, Sr.

Left to cherish Virginia’s memory are her brother James H. Thornton and his wife Peggy of Laguna Vista, TX, and her three nephews William R. (Bob) Thornton, III and wife Kathi; Mitchell B. Thornton and wife Alison; and Taylor C. Thornton; six great nephews; and beloved relatives from the Domanski family including Bob and Alice Domanski of San Benito, TX.
