J.D. “Papa” Cates, 91, of Bryan passed away peacefully Wednesday, October 31 at Hospice Brazos Inpatient Facility. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 3 at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan with Reverend Irvin Huckaby officiating. Interment will follow at Rest-Ever Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 – 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

J.D. was born August 1, 1927 in Comanche, Oklahoma the son of Rufus and Jessie (Philly) Cates. He loved fishing and going to the rodeos. J.D. enjoyed playing pool, dominos and gambling, especially throwing dice. He felt comforted by the words of the men and women watching t.v. ministries.

J.D. is preceded in death by his parents; wife of 56 years Ruby; son, Ronnie; daughter, Betty; four brothers and six sisters.

He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and David Guyton, Brenda and Billy Couch, and Becky Cates; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice Brazos Valley.
