Katherine Bussa Young, 93, of Bryan, left this world peacefully and sweetly, to go home to be with her Lord, with her daughter, and caregiver, by her side Friday February 25, 2011. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, February 27, at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday, February 28, at First United Methodist Church in Bryan. Interment
will follow at Rest-Ever Memorial Park Cemetery. Katherine was born December 16, 1917, in Milam County to Edd and Altha Vashti Silvey Bussa. She attended high school in Hearne and later attended the Scott & White School of Nursing in Temple. Upon graduating, she returned to Hearne to work at the Hearne Hospital. She eventually moved to Bryan where she met and married her love, Bill Young, who worked at a local funeral home and she worked as a registered nurse at the Bryan Hospital. During the war, Katherine followed Bill wherever she could. After working in surgery for sometime, Katherine decided to teach OC health class for two years at B.I.S.D. She later began work as a school nurse and then became the Director of the School Nurses until retiring. But, in her retirement she found herself even busier. She carried on the legacy of her parents and gave her heart to Christ at Grace Methodist Church in Hearne. She gave her hands to His work and His church. She led by example and lived to encourage others to reach beyond them selves to fulfill their own God given potential. “Her work was produced by faith, her labor was prompted by love and endurance inspired by hope in her Lord Jesus Christ” 1 Thess. 1:2-3 She believed “that we are God’s workmanship created in Christ Jesus to do good works which God prepared in advance for us to do” Eph. 2:10 She believed her Lord when He said, “Be careful not to do your good works before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you have no reward from your Father in heaven. So, when you do and give do so that your good works may be in secret. Then your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.” Matt 6:1-4
She kept a little note tucked in her Bible, which said, “If they find out that I did something good for someone then I must do something for someone else – I don’t want their praise to be my reward.” She believed that “all she had accomplished, her Lord had done for her.” IS 26:17 Katherine’s little feisty spirit stayed with her to the end. After a few weeks of being at St. Joseph Manor she told one of the male nurses “I want to make peace with you because I’m going to be leaving.” And just a few days before she left this world she said, “it is such a waste of
time being in this bed.” She is preceded in death by her husband, Bill Young; her parents; brother, Mercer Bussa; sister-in-law, Lois Bussa; nephews, Eddie Bussa, Babe Glen Bussa; many dear friends; numerous sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, as she was blessed to be married into a large loving family. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Renny and Stan Boase of Bryan; grandsons, Ty and Shane Boase of Bryan; niece, Gwen Bussa of Jackson, Miss.; sisters-in-law, Mary Young Hoggard of Houston, and Betty Young of El Campo; and many nephews and
nieces. To Katherine “The Word became flesh and made its dwelling among her. She had seen His glory, the glory of the one and only, who came from the Father, full of grace and faith. And from the fullness of His grace she received one blessing after another and another all the days of her life.” John 1:14, 16 As God so generously provided for her happiness with many sweet memories, a loving family, and many dear friends, and in knowing His presence and His word.
