

Funeral mass will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday August 8 at Santa Teresa Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Rest-Ever Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Sunday with a 7:00 p.m. rosary at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan.
Manuel was born in Sonora, Texas, but lived most of his life in Bryan and was a member of Santa Teresa Catholic Church. A member of the “Greatest Generation”, Manuel served in the U.S. Army with distinction in World War II where he was awarded four Bronze Stars, a metal awarded for heroic or meritorious achievement for service. He also received a Purple Heart awarded to service members wounded in combat. Manuel was a member of V.F.W. Post 4692.
Manuel was retired from Texas A&M University and known for his love of friends, music, western movies and the Houston Astros.
Manuel is preceded in death by his parents, Domingo and Delfina Portales, wife, Simona Portales, two sisters, Florinda Guerra and Ophelia Cerda, and a grandson, Patrick Hernandez.
He is survived by his children, Rosie and Joe Hernandez, Ray and Olga Portales, Manuel Portales, Jr., and Nora and Samuel Rosas; his siblings, Antonia Martinez, Daniel and Domitila Portales, Delfina Escamilla, and Ray and Barbara Portales; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
