She was the daughter of Francis “Frank” Boylan and Kathleen Lyons. She was a graduate of Mount Saint Bernard in Antigonish and attended Blinn College in Bryan, Texas. She had fond memories of the dances held at the Lord Nelson Hotel in Halifax during WWII. She worked in Labrador and as an Executive Assistant for the Aluminum Company of Canada (ALCAN) in Arvida, Quebec. She lived at the employee residence at The Saguenay Inn. While there, she met a young engineer – John Herbich. They subsequently married in Montreal, Quebec. Their travels took them to Kitimat, British Columbia where her husband worked on a “frontier-type” project in Chute-Du-Diable . Together with her devoted husband, John, they encompassed the globe due to his studies and work, including a stint in India for the United Nations. They settled in Bryan, Texas where they brought up their three children. Dr. John Herbich started the Ocean Engineering Program at Texas A&M University (TAMU). Many will remember Polly for co-hosting lively “ice-breakers” with John for his students and colleagues at the Ramada Inn and Hilton Hotel.
Polly Herbich is survived by her sister Doris Anstie (97), son, Dr. Gregory Herbich, daughter, Patricia Herbich O’Connor, and grand-daughter, Kaya O’Connor.
