

Michael Wayne Barney, a devoted father, cherished brother, and beloved friend, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2025, at the age of 80, due to respiratory failure from pneumonia. Born on December 18, 1944, in Watertown, N.Y., Michael’s life was a testament to service, warmth, and a love for life’s simple pleasures.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne Barney and Elizabeth “Betty” (Wise) Barney, as well as by his life-long friend from childhood, Don Scott. He was survived by his sister, Patricia and her husband, Wayne Truesdell of Watertown, N.Y. as well as his sister, Sheila and her husband, Rick Pullus, also of Watertown, N.Y. He is also survived by his children, Travis Barney of Bryan, TX, Heather and her husband, James Dornwell of La Grange, TX as well as his granddaughters, Emily and Claire Dornwell who brought immense joy to Michael’s life. Though his marriage to Betty (Freudenberg) Barney ended after 22 years, their bond remained strong, transforming into a lasting friendship. Michael is also survived by his niece, Tina (Truesdell) and her husband, Scott Evans of Englewood, Florida, niece, Wendy (Truesdell) and her husband, Robert Tennies of Dexter, N.Y., great nephews Nicholas Frederick and Conor O’Brien, great niece, Bethany O’Brien, and by his Goddaughter, Isabela Hammond, daughter of Gina Hammond.
Upon graduating from Watertown High School, Michael enlisted in the U.S. Army, a decision that would define much of his life’s journey. His career spanned an impressive 40+ years in which he served in the Vietnam War as well as in both Persian Gulf Wars. His dedication to his country was unwavering and he carried his experiences with grace and humility.
In 1980, Michael and his family relocated to the Austin, TX area where he continued his career in service of the U.S. Army via various stints of military active duty, reserves, and the civil service. After retiring in 2004, his love of travel led him to become a flight attendant for American Airlines as well as to pursue an interest in culinary arts by attending pastry chef school, showcasing his diverse interests and his willingness to embrace new challenges.
Michael was a member of the Kiwanis Club, Optimist Club, and the Leander Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a proud member of the American Legion where he found camaraderie and continued to support his fellow verterans.
A man of many talents, Michael found joy in carpentry, house painting, gardening, photography and travel. His collections of stamps, spoons, and foreign currency were a testament to his love for exploration and detail. Each piece in his collection told a story, much like the stories he shared with friends and family, always with a twinkle in his eye and a warm smile.
Michael’s personal qualities were as varied as his interests: He was known for his friendly, upbeat demeanor and had an unparalleled ability to make friends wherever he went. His laughter was contagious and his kindness knew no bounds.
As we remember Michael Wayne Barney, we celebrate a life well-lived, marked by service, love, and an unwavering optimism. His legacy will continue in the stories shared by those who loved him and in the impact that he made on every life he touched.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the American Legion.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at the American Legion 138 Sterling Street in Watertown, N.Y. 13601 where friends and family will gather to honor a remarkable man, whose life was a beacon of warmth and generosity. His ashes will be given a military burial service at the Central Texas State Veterans’ Cemetery in Killeen, TX on a forthcoming date.
