Nan V. Barnett Hunter was born July 10, 1932 to Wess and Zona (Knight) Barnett in Staley, TX. She was the youngest of five children. She attended the Oakhurst school system through 11th grade, graduating from Huntsville high school in 1949. She later graduated from McKenzie Baldwin Business College in Bryan with an accounting degree. She worked for almost 40 years in the Medical Field, retiring in 1996 from MHMR’s medical records department. She loved traveling, gardening, and all things related to nature, especially birds, flowers, butterflies, sea shells, and interesting shaped rocks. Her trips to see her son Rick Hunter in Colorado provided her with the ultimate life experiences in nature and were her most cherished, enjoying the immense outdoors and pristine beauty found there. She absolutely loved working in her vegetable gardens which produced such pleasure to all of her family and friends as she was an outstanding cook specializing in down home country dishes, no one could eat just one plate, there always had to be seconds.
She was an active member of the Northview Baptist church for over 35 years. She loved her church family and friends. Her personal relationship with Jesus Christ was always a very important part of her life and her Christian Faith remained steadfast through to the very end. She was very active in the choir, Sunday School, and enjoyed several trips to Glorieta Christian camps in New Mexico.
If you knew her, you would know she was a devoted Texas Aggie Fan along with a life time of cheering for the Dallas Cowboys with her mother Zona Barnett. She was never a 2 percenter, and cheered for both teams relentlessly to win in all games to the very end. She absolutely never gave up, just like her battle against cancer, she fought until the very end with the same zest she had lived her life. She was surrounded by her friends and children holding her hands, reading bible verses, and listening to beautiful Christian music. So fitting, the next day her entire yard was covered in White Wing Doves preparing for her send off to Heaven. Glory be to God and his wisdom.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother James, sisters Marie Fails, Addie Jackson, Mamie Harrison, and her daughter in law Valerie (Pfeffer) Hunter. She is survived by her children David Hunter of Boerne, Rick Hunter and wife Lorine, of Olathe, CO, and Lisa Barnes of Bryan. Grandchildren Tamara and husband David Dunn, Natalie, Timothy, Anthony Hunter, Carson Hunter, and Marin Barnes, along with one Great Grandchild Raven Gregory. She leaves behind 7 wonderful nieces and nephews especially Beth Hataway and Jay Jackson who showed her much Love over the years and especially during her recent daily struggles.
The family wishes to thank Scott and White Oncology staff for their excellent care and compassion extended to her on her many visits.
