Our beloved, and sassy, Stacie Rhea Merchant passed from this life on Sunday, January 12th, at the age of 60, with her family by her side and listening to her favorite song ever. Stacie was born in Brownwood, Texas on July 2, 1964 to proud parents, Wallace and Bettie Merchant. She was a lifelong resident of Bryan, Texas, where she was known for her joyful spirit, infectious laughter, and deep love for those around her.
Stacie’s life was one of love, joy, and celebration. A proud graduate of Bryan High School, Stacie finished her education in May of 1986. She loved school, not just for the learning, but for the connections she made with her teachers, particularly Ms. Fuchs and Ms. Johnson, and her classmates. Her bright smile and positive attitude made her a treasured member of her school community.
Stacie’s faith was important to her, and she was baptized on November 9, 1980, at Cavitt Church of Christ, a testament to the deep spiritual connection she felt throughout her life.
Stacie worked at various jobs over the years and retired from Bryan Independent School District in June 2015, after 16 years of dedicated service.
Stacie was an avid participant in the Special Olympics, where she competed in events like bowling, golf, and swimming. One of her proudest moments came in 1985, when she was chosen to carry the torch and light the flame at the start of the Special Olympics—an honor that reflected her bright spirit.
Outside of the Special Olympics, Stacie had a deep love for the outdoors. She spent many happy hours hunting and fishing with her dad, riding her 4-wheeler, enjoying the time they shared together. Her dog, Lady, was also a cherished companion, and Stacie loved nothing more than spending time with her furry friend.
Her vibrant personality and energy were always on full display, especially when there was a microphone in hand—whether it was singing or talking, Stacie made her voice heard. Stacie had an infectious personality and a love for life that was hard to match. Above all, Stacie loved her people fiercely—her family, friends, and everyone she met. Her big heart and caring nature touched the lives of all who knew her.
Stacie was preceded in death by her loving parents, Bettie and Wallace Merchant. She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Leslie and Bubba Bishop, niece and nephews, Cali, Josh, Derek and wife Meagan Bishop, and her great niece and nephew, Berkley and Crosby Bishop. Stacie is also survived by numerous cousins, and many precious friends.
The viewing to celebrate her life will be held on January 17th from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan, Texas. The funeral services will be held at Cavitt Church of Christ on Saturday, January 18th at 10:00am with burial following at Smetana Cemetery.
