Pete “Fathertime” Odom, III, 69, passed away March 10, 2018 in College Station. Born on August 12, 1948, Pete graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in Bryan in 1966. After high school, Pete enlisted in the Navy where he served as a medic on a hospital ship, the USS Repose, off the coast of Viet Nam during the Viet Nam War. Pete received an honorable discharge from the Navy, then attended Long Beach College in California, majoring in music.
Pete was the son of Doris (Schovajsa) Odom and William Peter Odom, II. He worked alongside his parents in their business, Bryan Dental Laboratory. Although Pete worked at the dental lab often, he had two primary passions he chose to pursue. Pete’s first passion was music. Pete played the bass guitar in several bands in the Brazos Valley and beyond. Pete played with the “Hall of Fame Gang” for many years. The Hall of Fame was the place to be in Bryan/College Station when the “Hall of Fame Gang” played there on Tuesday nights and many other nights with Pete on bass until He decided to quit “playing with the band.” Pete’s second passion, which never ended, was restoring, showing, and riding in antique cars. For the last twenty years, Pete focused on Volkswagens with a preference for the “bug.” He thoroughly enjoyed riding around in his yellow “bug” with the surfboards on top “looking for the next wave.”
Pete was preceded in death by his parents and younger brother, Paul Odom. He is survived by his spouse of twenty years, Doris Machinski, as well as, cousins, aunts, and uncles living out of state. Pete is also survived by many close friends including John Skrabanek, Ervin “Tukin” Autrey, Gary “Red” Moore, and Bill Shenkir.
A memorial service celebrating Pete’s life is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on March 24, 2018, 11:00, at Heritage Park in Bryan, Texas. The address is 600 S Hutchins Bryan, Texas. The family requests attendees drive their old and/or antique vehicles, if possible, to the memorial service. Pete almost never a missed a car show and would certainly enjoy viewing the “rides” gathered in his memory.
A special thank you goes to Seth McWharter, Mike Thomas, and Fran Duane with Encompass Hospice in College Station, Texas for the exceptional care and assistance provided to Pete and Doris during the last few months of Pete’s life.
