Alfonso Giordano passed away on September 9, 2015 in Vancouver, B.C. Born on May 11, 1927 in Castrolibero, Cosenza, Italy, Alfonso lived in Cosenza until 1951 when he came to Vancouver, a city he loved from the moment he arrived. Alfonso left Italy for Canada in order to pursue opportunities for a better life. Following a one-year commitment with the CNR, he began working in construction as an insulator and did so until his retirement. Alfonso was very much a self-taught man. If he needed something he found a way to build it. This included building an extension and adding a basement to the first small home he shared with his family, making furniture for that home and building needed tools, most notably an electric saw. Alfonso designed a new home for his family and completed building it in 1966 with the help of his wife, Romilda. As well, he loved to work and spend time in his vegetable garden. He also enjoyed playing the mandolin that he taught himself to play. Alfonso's greatest accomplishment, however, is in the love and generosity of spirit that he extended to his family and friends. He was a devoted husband to Romilda, his wife of sixty-two years and a gentle and caring father to his daughter, Anna (George) and son, Carlo, who passed away in 1983. Alfonso will be forever loved and missed by his wife, daughter, son-in-law, extended family in Toronto, Italy and Australia and his many friends. A service will take place on Friday, September 18, 2015 at 10:00 A.M. at Bell & Burnaby Funeral Chapel, 4276 Hastings Street, Burnaby B.C. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations may be made to the B.C. Cancer Agency or charity of choice if desired. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.bellburnaby.com
