Alfred Gerhard Herfort died peacefully at the age of 89 on September 14, 2021. After growing up in Germany, Alfred and his wife Helga (died 2015) moved to Canada in 1965 to raise a family. They raised two sons (Frank and Ralph) who then gave them four grandsons (Justin, Connor, Brody and Jackson).
Alfred always had a pot of coffee and some cake ready for anyone who popped by the house. He loved having family and friends around and would have regularly scheduled Skype chats with far-flung friends around the world.
A very independent man, it wasn’t uncommon to have to talk the octogenarian out of cutting wood, cleaning gutters or knocking down yet another wall. He was known to invent and build a motorized dumbwaiter, whip up a new bookshelf with random supplies, sew Halloween costumes and bake endless cookies in time for Christmas.
If Alfred wasn’t busy building, fixing or creating then you could find him keeping up with the latest scientific discoveries and technological advancements. Alfred loved the future and loved to have access to new gadgets and information. Fascinated by what was to come, he loved to talk about the world.
Alfred will be laid to rest alongside his wife at Oceanview Cemetery in Burnaby. Feel free to pop by but don’t forget to bring some coffee and cake.
