It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of BEN HAY (BENNY) WONG, a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on January 24, 2016 aged 78. Born in Taishan (Chiu Bak Village), China in 1937 he immigrated to Canada at the tender age of 15 to join his half-brothers in Swift Current, SK. There he learned to play basketball, attended high school and started his career in the restaurant business. In 1958 he returned to Hong Kong to meet Sui Ha (Susan) Lee and married that year. After two years separated from his family in Whitehorse, YK they joined him and moved to Vancouver where he was a proud co-owner of the House of Fortune in North Vancouver. Then, he became the General Manager of Ming’s, a well-known dimsum restaurant in the heart of Chinatown in the 80’s. As a member of Wong’s Benevolent Society and Hon Hsing Athletic Club (often found playing the drums in Chinese New Year’s parades) he honoured his Chinese heritage and community. In his spare time, he taught himself to play erhu (Chinese fiddle) and violin. The Hastings Racetrack was one of his favourite pastimes when he wasn’t taking pleasure in conjuring up a feast for his family to enjoy. He is lovingly survived by his wife Sui Ha (Susan) Wong, his son Stanley (Cleo), his daughters Mary (Brian), Margaret (Brandon), Marion (Alan) and his pride and joy, grandchildren Jasmine, Trisha, Celine, Kate, and Joshua. He will be deeply missed.
In lieu of flowers, if desired, a donation in his memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C. is welcomed.
