It is with a deep sense of loss, and with fond affection, that we announce the passing of David Orval Bagnall – beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. David passed peacefully into the presence of his Lord and Saviour on July 8, 2022, at the age of 91 years.
David will be dearly missed by his loving wife, Elenor, of 68 years, and his children - Margaret Copp, Heather (John Dyck), Graham, and Alison (Seth McKinley). He will also be greatly missed by his grandchildren - Esther, Andrew (Kim), Rachel (Jon), Aaron (Shannon), Nathan (Dorothée), Sharon (Tim), Julia (Tim), Anna (Andrew), Janette, Timothy, David, Stephen, Samuel, Westley, Naomi, and William, as well as 24 great grandchildren. Predeceased by his brother, Clifford, he also leaves to lovingly remember him, two sisters - Muriel Beers, and Barbara Bagnall.
David was born to William and Jean (Kennedy) Bagnall on December 23, 1930, in Winnipeg. He attended the Greenway school as well as the West End Gospel Hall Sunday school, and his earliest memories are of a very happy and carefree childhood. At the age of ten, he moved with his family to Vancouver where he graduated from Kitsilano High. His cheerful spirit and wonderful sense of humour remained with him throughout life.
On July 19, 1954, David married Elenor Funston, and together they lovingly and prayerfully raised their four children, creating many happy family memories. Employed for many years with Fraser River Pile Driving, he later took a position at North American Pipe & Steel working alongside his cousin and close friend, Earl Ritchie.
The most important event in David’s life occurred at the age of 14 years. After the sudden passing of his mother, he was awakened to his own need, as a sinner, to have a right relationship with God. Through the truth of a Bible verse - John 5:24 - he understood what the Lord Jesus had done for him on the cross. By simply putting his trust in Christ, he came to know Him as his personal Lord and Saviour.
David continued to live in the enjoyment of this salvation for 78 years. He deeply appreciated the fellowship of the Christians who gather at the Fairview Gospel Hall. Here, he devoted himself to the care of all - the sick, the elderly, the young, the needy. He had an open home, and together with his wife, had the joy and privilege of extending hospitality to many. His interest in others extended well beyond his own circle to all he came in contact with, and to the encouragement of the Lord’s work throughout the world. In his younger years, David also gave much of his time to the responsibilities of Sunday school work, open air preaching, gospel literature distribution, as well as several gospel tent outreaches in the interior of BC.
As a family, we knew our Dad and Grandpa not only as a very special man to spend time with, but also as a man of prayer who prayed for his children, grandchildren and many others by name every day. We saw his gracious manner of life and the priority he placed on evaluating everything in light of the Word of God. This has left an indelible impression on our hearts. His desire was always that his life would bring honour and glory alone to the One Who died for him, and could be summed up in the words of another: “Not I, but Christ.” (Gal. 2: 20)
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 on July 22, 2022 at the Ocean View Funeral Home, 4000 Imperial St., Burnaby, with burial to follow at Ocean View Cemetery.
